Deadline is reporting that Amanda Seyfried (Mama Mia) is in “final negotiations” to play the pivotal role of Cosette in Working Title’s upcoming film adaptation Les Miserables. Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech) will direct. 
Les Miserables tells the story of the destitute Jean Valjean, sentenced to hard labor for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his starving family. Finally out of jail, he continues to be haunted by the cold-hearted Inspector Javert. A chance encounter with a kind man changes Valjean’s life forever. But with Javert dogging him for the rest of his life, Valjean, for all his success is never quite free.
With a star-studded cast, a glorious musical score, and compelling, poignant story, this incarnation of Les Miserables, created by writer Alain Boublil and composer Jean-Claude Shoenberg will certainly be one of the most highly anticipated films of the year. Hugh Jackman (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) will portray Valjean, with Russell Crowe (Gladiator) in hot pursuit as Javert. Anne Hathaway (Dark Knight Rises) has been cast as Fantine and Eddie Redmayne (Pillars of the Earth) as Marius. Helena Bonham Carter (The King’s Speech) will play Madame Thenardier and it’s been rumored that Sacha Baron Cohen (Hugo) will play Monsieur Thenardier. The film is set to be released December 7, 2012.
