A candidate for election night (on Sundance)

If you don't live in a place you can spend the evening at election parties (like here in San Francisco), your best vote with your remote is Sundance.

They are showing a number of election related documentaries. RJ Cutler's A Perfect Candidate shows how close Ollie North got to becoming Senator North. Unprecedented examines what happened in Florida and how George Bush ended up being President (which Aaron writes about and is available on DVD).

Our Times is a compelling examination of the 2001 election campaign in Iran which I saw at the San Francisco International film festival. The first half follows the filmmaker Rakshan Bani-Etemad's daughter and her friends as the campaign idealistically for reformist candidates many have become disillusioned with.

The second half might remind some of the California recall as directed by Errol Morris rather than James Cameron. There were over 700 candidates for president (48 were women). The filmmaker meets with a few of the candidates for president who have no hope of winning.

She ends up focusing on a single mother and her attempt to find a new place to live with the stigma of not having a husband.

All of the documentaries will be repeated throught the month. Click on the film titles on this page to see when they will be shown again.

Tonight, I'll be blogging various election parties in San Francisco.

Next Tuesday, Robert Drew's classic cinema verite Primary on JFK's campaign will come out on DVD.
