Well that was a heck of a season of Fox's 24, wasn't it? I think that had the highest ongoing character body count yet. I don't know how anybody who doesn't have a DVR watches this show... I stack 'em up on the hard drive for weeks (delaying my gratification) and then I watch them 2-3 in a row without commercials. :-)
I have to say that after the excitement the show delivers week to week, the ending left me a little disappointed. There was tension in the first half, but the decompression at the end left me feeling somewhat empty. It was nice to see Jack break down after such a harrowing year/day. He would not have been human if all he's been through didn't have an effect on him.
I thought chopping Chase's hand off was a bit much. Why weren't the bomb guys able to go by wire connection position instead of color? Maybe it was a different bomb configuration altogether? They made up for the hand chop with Jack's decision of where to stash the about-to-explode bomb, however: A cafeteria glass refrigerator? Good call. :-)
Looks like a lot of folks won't be back next year... maybe the writers are looking to break the mold a bit, which can be a good thing.

I actually LIKED the way it decompressed at the end. The worst hardcore shiznit was the hotel situation in the middle of the season, and sacrificing Chapelle.
They ended more with thinking with the president's personal story. They had the big murder/suicide last week in the penultimate episode, but it didn't really sink in emotionally.
It did much more so this week as the president called for his children. Oh, crap. These people are frickin' RUINED. Besides the emotions of losing your MOTHER and WIFE, start thinking out what kind of intense evil media onslaught will be descending on this family. Yowsa!
The ending was better for being Palmer's unexpected but logical personal decision rather than some big boring shoot-em-up. Leaves you far more to chew on.
This ending was also better for not having a cliffhanger, as they did most annoyingly last season. I don't fool around with watching twenty four damned hours of this single storyline to NOT get closure at the end of the season.

I didn't mind unspooling a bit either and agree with Al that the call to the kids was what made the horror of the situation sink in. The arc this year was very different, starting slow but building in the second half. I also had a problem with pretty much dropping Jack's heroin addiction issue - that doesn't go away overnight (literally). Overall, a good season: not the impact of the first half of the first season, but that probably isn't possible now that the format has become routine.
I also heard that most of the regulars will only be recurring roles next season and that they are going to vary the approach somehow - should be interesting.
