24 Day 4, 3:00 AM - 4:00 AM

More graphic violence. Yeah, sure, like I'm falling for that one again. I'm gonna go wake the kids and get 'em down here.

Old Doc Besson continues to work on Jong. Is he really the guy they want working on Jong, given his track record? And it's pretty sad when Curtis has to act as the voice of reason.

Jack has a difficult scene with Audrey. That kind of scene is hard for actors to do, but they handled it well. That's been one of the highlights of this season, the emotional scenes between Jack and Audrey. The actors have played them so well.

Audrey is having a tough time understanding it all. But the Vulcans showed us the way long ago; The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one.

But silly Jack presses his luck, and asks Audrey "what do you want me to do?" What did he possibly hope to accomplish with that question? Audrey takes that softball and knocks it into the Pacific. She replies "Leave."

Bill from Division is again woefully ignorant of what is going on under his nose in CTU. Jack came busting into CTU with a wounded Chinese he carried out of the Chinese Consulate like a sack of potatoes, he ordered CTU's doc to stop working on Paul at gunpoint, Paul died, and Bill had no idea any of this was going on.

Jack, still caught up in the emotional battle with Audrey, says "I'm sorry" to Bill. Jack, that's called "transference".

Hey, Novick has a secretary to answer his phone calls. Can't CTU get someone to answer the phones?

Jack tells him Jong is still in surgery. "Still"? It's been about 5 minutes! Jack also says "his men" weren't responsible for the catastrophe at the Consulate. What does he mean by "his men"? There was just Jack, Curtis and the anonymous cheek-scratching agent. (I assume Translator Rabb sat that one out.)

There's talk about getting people alibis for where they were. Oh dear, this cover-up thing is starting to look shaky already. Nice going, Palmer. You've been there an hour and you've already just about started a shooting war with a billion Chinese.

(Favorite exchange from the movie Red Dawn:
Well, who *is* on our side?
Six hundred million screamin' Chinamen.
Well, last I heard, there were a billion screamin' Chinamen.
There were.)

Chloe is sitting rather oddly, with her neck all scrinched up, like a junior high class of Vulcans were practicing their nerve pinches on her, and failing miserably. Ah, she's worried about that Cisco Security Response and that network traffic spike. CTU is actually aware that they are experiencing a Denial of Service attack. Too bad all the nuclear reactors didn't have decent network security.

So who, what, where is going to be taken out. I definitely look forward to seeing Heller Junior, I knew he was up to no good. And where's Beyrouz anyway?

Watching a film depends on the basic principle of a willing suspension of disbelief. Now, when they do things that are patently ridiculous in what is supposed to be a realistic setting, that's an object for criticism. Certainly 24 has been guilty of some things that deserve calling out over the years.

However, these reviews have been largely filled with nitpicking and looking for excuses NOT to suspend disbelief. OK, if that's what you want to do, but you're missing the larger points of the drama and the dilemnas of the characters by doing so.

Plus, you're bitching often about things that have at least halfway plausible explanations. For example, you complained particularly much over the 300 mile radius of where the warhead could be. That might reasonably come from not knowing just where they started out. They ambushed the warhead on the road. Where exactly?

Also, you're just looking for cheap sarcasm about the characters, particularly Chloe. The basic point of the character is that she's a gifted computer geek with a good heart, but poor people skills. Now THAT surely is not unrealistic. Also, considering what she's been through in just the last couple of hours, I'd think you might cut her a little slack for acting a little odd. Plus, she's pretty hot.

I do realize I'm open to the criticism of nitpicking. Fair enough. I really am a fan of the show, have been since the beginning. My intent to put the show under a microscope this season was just to have a little fun with the writing, and take an approach no one else is taking.

(There is a, shall we say, pitiless site that does biting reviews, but I make it a point not to use profanity, and I don't make harsh comments about the actors themselves. Quite the opposite. I think the acting is one of the strongest points of the show. Especially this season, the great acting helps sell what I think is a weak plot, whereas it could be a disaster in the hands of lesser actors.)

I, too, am a Chloe fan. Next to Jack, she was my favorite character last season. I was thrilled to see her return this season. One of my main criticisms of the way she's written this season is that I think they've forced Chloe to be sarcastic in some situations, as if the show knows the fans like it, so they try to wedge it in places where it doesn't quite fit.
