2005 Fall Line-Up Reviews : Take 6 – Supernatural

I saw the previews for Supernatural and wasn’t really impressed. Looked like another run of the mill ghost hunting show to me. Plus McG is behind it so I only expected some glossy horror show that would look like his movies (Charlie’s Angels). But Professor Hagenmeyer over at the Spacecast Board said:

Heads up, horror fans!!!

If you didn't catch this on CITY TV, be sure to tune in to SPACE on Friday for the coolest slice of spooky telly since the awesome, blink-and-it's-gone Matthew Fox starrer, 'Haunted'.

Seriously... I think I'm in love! If the pilot is anything to go by, this is gonna be a wicked and creepy ride through the backroads of America with the brothers Winchester. Essentially it was part 'The X-Files', part 'The Norliss Tapes', with a mild dash of 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer', and damn... This potion works!

One of the best things about the show is the Brother-Brother dynamic of the two stars, Jensen Ackles (if this guy doesn't become a major, break-out star... No justice) and Jared Padalecki. The witty and believable relationship between these two serves as a perfect human anchor for the viewer amid the occult shenanigans. It also provides a solid base that leaves no room (THANK GOD) for the romantic clap-trap that often ruins similarly themed shows (sorry 'The X-Files', I love ya, but Carter sold out to the Shippers in the end).

Alas, it's probably too cool to last, but while it's on the air... Come get some! If you like creepy thrills, mystery, action and a dash of humor... This is your show! Grab it while it's hot!

With such high praise from the Lord of Darkness himself, I figured, this needs to be taken seriously and looked at. And yesterday I got around to it. Well, once again Hagenmeyer and I agree. This is truly one fun ride of a show.

The show begins with the supernatural death of our Winchester brothers' mother. Basically, she’s gutted on the ceiling of the bedroom and then spontaneously combusts. While Daddy Winchester is getting Sam, still a baby at that point, from the crib, we witness a demon looking silhouette forming in the fire consuming the house. They, Dad, Sam and Dean, run out of the house.

We cut forward some 20 years later to find Sam living a dreamlike student life. He just got an interview for law-school (scheduled for the next Monday) and has the uber-perfect girlfriend who is hotter than molten magma and she’s completely in love with Sam; supports him, encourages him, bakes him cookies and everything. Everything is going so good… too good. In horror things this, good things are never meant to last.
