19E and American Idol Owe Taylor Hicks - Comments Page 3

Silver-haired Soulman providing American Idol its potential to deliver a real idol.

One evening when I had about decided it might be my last night to watch American Idol, into the audition room entered a quiet man. Hicks' first audition. He appeared older than his reported age due to his silvered hair, his reserved mannerisms, his politeness. He was asked by Simon Cowell what he was doing there and why he was there to try out for Idol. His quiet, reply "I want my voice heard, because I think I have one."…

Darn tootin'; he kicked major butt last night. As Taylor would say, WHOO!

Mike, Elliott has a great voice in his own right. You said you are a trained singer. Elliott has a terribly fast, heavy vibrato. I love the tone of Elliott's voice, but this quality of his voice grates on my nerves. Chris also has this similar vibrato, except Chris sounds like a goat because of it. I, too, am a trained singer and can recognize talent. They're all talented in their own way. Everyone has their own opinions and that's great. But to say that Taylor's voice is average seems to me that you haven't been really listening. The man can sing.

That said, you can't compare Elliott's and Taylor's voices. I told you specifically why I do and don't like Elliott's voice. But I would never say, "Taylor is better than Elliott." They're not comparable. Elliott has his style and Taylor has his as well.

The one thing that I will say is that Taylor FEELS the music. As a singer, did you catch the inflection in "Something" when he said, "something in the way she wooooos me." It generated spontaneous applause from the audience, not because it was a big, huge note, but because it was heartfelt (and in my opinion, sexy!).

By the way, Mike, I don't think Taylor is smug at all. If you are referring to him laughing at the judges last night, I think it's because he is thinking, "Well, I can't please them, so I'm just going to do my own thing and not give a crap about what they say." If you really want to know the truth, I think the whole "Play that Funky Music" song was a sort of "F-You" to Simon and all the other powers that be. The show has tried to mold Taylor into what they want, but it is a letdown because his fans know how great he really is. Well, the real Taylor was back last night. He, in my opinion, was the only contestant who showed that he could really put together two diverse performances. He showed fun, whacky Taylor and smooth, vocally-rich Taylor.

Oh yeah, and Jewels, how right you were about Taylor having something in store for Simon! Taylor's first number had Simon speechless! WHOOOOOOO!!!

Carrie, regarding "Chris sounds like a goat" - I don't think I've actually said that anywhere, you know, out loud, but I have always thought it!

    Ms. Davis, "WHOOOOOOO!" is right!

A few thoughts, on the other contestants:

I find Katharine lacking in that I don't see or feel she connects with the music. She's too busy vamping and mugging at the camera and not really immersing herself in the songs. The second song of the night that she sang was indeed the best, the first a real train wreck. I was reminded of a little girl who likes to have her picture taken, and be center of attention, "Look at me Daddy! Look at me!" Katharine delivers a trained, decent vocal performance. (I'm so glad McFather did not bawl into the cameras again.) What made season one's Kelly Clarkson so great; the ability to immerse herself in the music. You see where that talent took Kelly.

Chris is being so Pimped I can hardly stand it; and yes, he does seem like a nice guy, but let's focus on the music. Same, same, same. I really thought he'd do Shinedown well, he just couldn't pull a Brent Smith. He had to stammer and make excuses for himself ...a rocker that can't rock more than a few tunes without having trouble?

Elliott is a sweetheart, I do like some of the songs he has performed, but he's not winner caliber.

The way Taylor handled the night was genius; first song he let loose his rowdy side, the second, a great singing performance. Taylor's handling of "Something" brought to the forefront how really fine he is as a singer. The 'feeling the music' is a huge part of the delivering the product successfully.

Regarding my thoughts on Tay having a surprise for Simon, Carrie, I'm getting a feel for how Tay ticks - he needed to pull another rabbit out of his hat. (Ta Da!)

Next week, he's going to surprise not just Simon, he's going deliver a surprise to everyone. I can't wait!

    May 04, 2006 at 9:49 am

Ms. Richardson, I'll say it aloud. Chris has talent and seems like a fine human, but HE SOUNDS LIKE A GOAT. The man actually bleats.

Elliot is talented and nice and real, but HE IS DULL.

Ice-cold Kat McPhee has a lovely voice and is pretty, but so what? Her voice is not nearly as good as she thinks and she comes across as smug. SHE'S ALL TECHNIQUE, NO HEART.

It's Taylor who has the chops, the passion, the excitement, the personality and more. He is, as has been said previously, the whole package and SUCH a joy to watch (or even to hear with eyes closed; his "Something" moved me).

And dig this: I hear those twerps at Vote for the Worst are backing Taylor now - but NOT because they think he's the worst in any way. Their support for Tay is motivated by VFTW's belief that AI is sabotaging the Soulman in order to boost the Goat and the Kat. I hope to see the rogue site succeed in its first noble effort by helping make Tay Hicks the American Idol.

  • 82 - Jewels

    May 04, 2006 at 10:33 am

Ms. Davis, I lurk on VFTW's site often. I knew after Kellie was gone, they'd come to Tay's aide. It is obvious to anyone really paying attention to this show what is going on. The folks on the VFTW site are intelligent, funny, entertaining, and usually spot-on regarding the performers. They, as a group possess, or maybe they're just possessed (!!!) with a unique evil sense of humor and perspective. What VFTW stands for is not so much bringing down any one contestant, they just like to poke their virtual fingers in the eyes of 19E and AI.

I liken their joining up with the Soul Patrol as a sort of Catwoman coming to the aide of Batman to beat the Joker. ;)

  • 83 - NR Davis

    May 04, 2006 at 10:39 am

Wow, that description is dead on, assuming that Catwoman is VFTW and the Joker is 19E.

  • 84 - Jewels

    May 04, 2006 at 11:21 am

    Exactly, Ms. Davis!

  • 85 - Carrie

    May 04, 2006 at 1:28 pm

Ha! Ms. Davis said the GOAT and the KAT! I never thought of it like that. I have always thought that Chris sounds like a goat. And he cannot sing properly. Sure, he can pretty much carry a tune, but he does not sing properly at all. I bet Taylor was cracking up inside when Chris' voice was going from singing a few songs that day. Taylor's been doing that for years and he still has a voice! :)

You both mentioned VFTW. I find it funny that most of the people on that site did not like Taylor's "Something" at all. I thought that was one of his best performances. I will say that the more I watch it, the more I fall in love with it, but I was still blown away the first time I saw it. I wanted to say, "Now, that, Simon, is a vocal masterclass." But at least simon pretty much complimented him. Speaking of VFTW, some people are convinced that Taylor gave a shoutout to the "_sshole Patrol" at the end of his performances. Apparently, Taylor's dad was on the news where they brought up VFTW and his dad said Taylor is happy about it because he understands why he is their pick.

What really bothers me about Kat is her ability to smile all the way through a sad song! Last week I wanted to say, "You have NOTHING! Why are you smiling?" (after her "I have Nothing"). This week, she sang another sadder song (Black Horse is not a happy song, no matter that it's upbeat). Why the heck was she smiling the entire time? Grrrrr. I do think she has a nice voice, but geez. Feel the song a little at least!

  • 86 - Carrie

    May 04, 2006 at 1:40 pm

And another thing that has been bothering me is some of the news reviews on Taylor. I think it was People that called PTFM "undisciplined." What? Others called it a wreck. MSNBC totally ripped him. EW gave a very positive review, though.

It's so sad that people don't "get" Taylor. Some people think Taylor is trying to win with gimmicks like dancing and falling down on the stage. Personally, I thought that was the most hilarious thing ever. He was thumbing up his nose up at the powers that be and Simon. Honestly. And some think that he did it as a way to say to Chris, "See, I can sing lying on the floor too." I don't think that at all, but it's a funny thought. I don't think Taylor's that vindictive. I just thought PTFM was hilarious...and he sang it well! :) That's the ironic part. He dances all over the place but he can still sing perfectly. I'd say PTFM is right up there with CLTCL for me. I think CLTCL was a bit better vocally, but who cares?

Oh, and one more comment. What is up with Randy Jackson totally dissing Taylor? On "Something," he started out negative but never finished his critique: "Okay the cool thing is you chose a good song, but...you know, Paula, we need to have a Beatles night." It's like, where was the critique? He started off negative and didn't even go anywhere with it. Simon busted out laughing when he did this. I still don't know why. Plus, someone said that Randy totally forgot about Taylor in an interview where he talked about the performances. He mentioned everyone else except Taylor...like he wasn't important anymore. That's pathetic. Now TPTB have the judges pimping Chris (and de-pimping Taylor) for them.

  • 87 - NR Davis

    May 04, 2006 at 2:00 pm

I'm glad Taylor knows the reason for his VFTW anointing. He is most assuredly not the worst.

The Kat embodies the worst of singers like Whitney and Linda Ronstadt. Technically, great singers. Great singers. But both leave me cold on an emotional level. McPhee's performance of the fab KT Tunsdall tune was OK - the reason she was on her knees eludes me - but yes, she obviously had no idea of the meaning of what she was singing. Why are people falling all over this girl?

  • 88 - yodaddy

    May 04, 2006 at 3:39 pm

there are lots of very popular singers who don't technically have great voices, so the pontificating of "trained singers" (who therefore profess to be more qualified than others to identify talent -- though i do not believe that necessarily follows, but if they need that conceit to assert their validity, so be it) means little in this horse race. it is the performer who connects emotionally with the voting audience who will win. even if it could be proven taylor has the best voice, i wouldn't buy his records -- but i would buy chris's, because he connects with me.

  • 89 - Carrie

    May 04, 2006 at 3:53 pm

What about Chris connects with you? I'm just curious. I like to hear all viewpoints.

  • 90 - NR Davis

    May 04, 2006 at 3:54 pm

True, and many of us would not consider buying anything by Chris because he doesn't connect with us.

  • 91 - Jewels

    May 04, 2006 at 10:26 pm

yodaddy, I wouldn't buy Chris' music, like Ms. Davis said, I just don't see any connection. He sounds like most of the rockers out there today. If you want to listen to the kind of rock he has been trying to do, pick up a "Shinedown" CD. One difference, Brent Smith can go on for hours without breaking down...

Carrie, regarding what they were bantering about in VFTW, "Something" - you just have to take it with a grain of salt so to speak. It's not in their nature to hand out praise. If you have a one on one conversation with the site Founder, as can be found on their site and GrayCharles.com, he is really a fan of Tay's. Some of the folks on VFTW just have to snark. They can't control it. ;)

Randy's riding the Pimp Machine. That's all there is to it.

Every one is going to hate me for this but I have to say it. I do not like Taylor Hicks. I am so upset that he has made it this far. Don't get me wrong I like his style of music, and I like that he gets in to it. Am I the only one that hears him! He is not consistantly good, and to me you have to be good each time your out there. He is off on his notes a lot but of course he makes up for it in his goofy ways. For some reason people like that he looks like he is having a seizer every time he dances. It reminds me of William Hung, every one liked that he was so terrible...he even came out with CDs. Of course he isn't as bad as William Hung. The world is crazy, we are suppost to be voting for the most talented. I hate that Taylor has such a big following, to me he doesn't deserve to be an American Idol. I think everyone likes him because he is different from all the others. Its nice to be different but you also have to go for how well they do. Chris shouldn't have been voted off he is way better than Huckelberry...I mean Hicks. Hicks stop looking at the camera you scare me.. you look like a child molester. Chris has been consistantly good...practically the only one that has. I'm sorry if I made everyone upset, its just how I feel.

  • 93 - Jewels

    May 11, 2006 at 12:55 pm

Everyone's entitled to their opinions. Regarding, "he looks like he is having a seizer every time he dances., it's 's e i z u r e' and no he doesn't look like he's semi-epileptic. America voted, as 'they' say, and Chris is out.

Simon looked particularly nauseated didn't he? Made me smile.

I adore everything Hicks does, he is a lightning bolt force of crazy nature.

    Groove on Soulman!

    May 11, 2006 at 1:03 pm

Apparently, Ms. Desirea cannnot grasp that there are many people who DISAGREE with her on the subject of whether Taylor is "good" and on whether he is - apart from dancing, being "goofy" (as the anti-TH talking points instruct their minions to describe his performances), and showing off his personality - a talented singer. Hicks fans contend that he IS. Whether you agree or not, Ms. Desirea, you must accept that others DO consider Taylor the best SINGER of the bunch - and the WHOLE package (something many contend the other remaining contestants don't have).

    Respectfully submitted,

Should I misspell something maybe that wood...ooops I mean would get your attention! Remember... seizer.. no I'm sorry its SEIZURE. Its funny how upset you guys get about TAYLOR, its really serious business for you. You guys are so obsessed, he could be picking underwear out of his butt and you would say: OMG I CAN'T BELIEVE how TALENTED he is, I can't wait to smell his hand! Sorry that was really gross, but kinda funny...wait.. kind of funny would be the correct grammar. I'm waiting for a comment, you must be away from your computer watching reruns of your beloved Gaylor...um did I spell that wrong? I know I'm going over board on the obsession of spelling you have. Hey, at least you not just obsessed with Taylor.

Desirea, you're a sad little troll who needs to realize "The Billy Goat's Gruff" is a fairy tale so you can stop auditioning. You've many misspelling and grammatical errors, but frankly you are boring, not worth anymore time except for this last post. In the future your trollishness will not garner any further comments. You, my apparently sick and challenged darling, need to get yourself a life. This is an article about Hicks, but you in your sad and I guess unhappy existance want somehow to feel you matter so you're attempting to change the focus to you. You're out.

Wow, you are making me sad :-(. I really don't care what you have to say, I just love reading it. Calling me a troll... please... you are ripping out my heart. Sorry that I'm so challenged, clearly you are far more superior than I. I should bow down to the princess! Just because you don't like what I have to say...doesn't mean you have to hurt my poor little feelings. Darn...too bad I'm not worthy. Well, I guess I will go back to my happy...oh I mean my unhappy exitance. Since I guess I am not wanted here...who would of thought that, I am completely shocked. Do you know any other fairy tales that I can audition for? Oh, I'm sorry.... I forgot I was OUT.

Ms Jewels, I’m sorry for everything that I said to you. I have been really stressed. I have been taking care of my sister in-law and nephew, on top of that... I have two children of my own...three if you count my husband. There have been a lot of things going on that would be too much to describe. This is my outlet, I am so sorry that I said those things. I just reread what I wrote and I feel so terrible, you have every right to say the things you said to me. I promise I won’t be back; this is the last time I am saying anything to you. Hicks’ is pretty good I’m just upset about Chris, on top of everything else. I guess you were right about me having an unhappy life. The only thing good right now... is my babies.

I kind of enjoyed Desirea's dissenting opinion. Sure it was a little overboard at times (like Taylor) off key at times (like Taylor) and didn't lack for enthusiasm (like Taylor). I admire Taylor's ability to get out there and put what he has out there - the problem I find is that it isn't much. I personally think anyone of the 3(including now defunct Chris) others have much greater talent and professionalism. Sure you can pick at any of them and find fault - Kat's cooler professionalism, Chris' less versatile repertoire, and Elliot's warble. But all these seem minor to me compared to outright goofiness, lack of vocal talent, and incredible cheesiness of Taylor - I think with ADR you could substitute any song he has sung onto any performance and get exactly the same goofy performance. This to me simply is not talent. At the risk of been pilloried and burned at the stake I'll say it - Simon is right "Karaoke bar/lounge singer" is right. Doesn't mean I can't like or even respect a good lounge entertainer - I just expect perhaps unrealistically, more from a nationwide talent contest. Let the flames fly. ;)

This hick is the reason I stopped watching the show. Can't sing, can't dance (Elaine on Seinfeld moves way better than he ever could). I'm glad to see the words 'seizure' and 'epileptic' come to at least one other mind in America when they see this joker on stage. Truly horrible. Anyway, this contest is rigged, so it's hard to care about the results, one way or the other.

Love ya Taylor Hicks! This is America’s music!!!! You are US and WE sent the music industry a big fat message!!!! Much love, ~ Michaux
Hicks’ sound is more classic soul and R&B, which isn’t among the current priorities of the ClearChannel empire. That means it’s not heard on the radio very often.
Perhaps that’s the point. The 63.4 million votes that led to his victory could be read as a signal that maybe not everyone is in the market for cookie-cutter pop music. Maybe the viewers are asking for some variety in their radio diet, rather than just another manufactured Jessica Simpson/Britney Spears clone.

Hello, Hazel, aka Florida Fan, I'm so happy for you that you and your husband were able to get great seats and that you were able to deliver to Taylor, in person, the roses. How thoughtful and sweet of you to do this. Taylor received a great review from the local paper, and I'm glad for him.
