This week in hot pursuit of what stylish New Yorkers are buzzing about, Cecile Raubenheimer finds subterranean-chic in Midtown at Amalia, a mind-bending new restaurant and lounge (courtesy of Greg Brier of Butter and Aspen fame) with a psychedelic decor and delicious Mediterranean menu. Located adjacent to the Dream Hotel and named after Sigmund Freud’s mother, look for blond wood, Italian tile, hand-painted chinoiserie wallpaper, baroque portraits, and antique Venetian mirrors. Sounds like a bit of a mishmash? Trust us, it works. We also previewed Amalia’s soon-to-open D’Or lounge which already has the fashion set energized after recent parties thrown by Zac Posen and Surface Magazine. Heather Tierney of Sorted NYC weighs in on her favorite dishes at Amalia, the hype surrounding the new spot, and why downtowners don’t mind traveling north to check it out.
