To say that Kerry King is one of the most influential guitarists in music today, crossing the lines of musical genres, is almost redundant. There is hardly a band that doesn’t cite Slayer as a musical influence, whether it be for speed, precision or the incredible musicianship that each member of the band has been perfecting for nearly 30 years.
The powerful combination of Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell and Slayer’s Kerry King set a bar that crossed the confines of musical genre to influence musicians from metal to mainstream pop. We recently interviewed Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo as well and he was amused to hear who was citing him as an influence. Another fun Slayer interview. These guys are just a blast to talk to.
The other thing that has always been noted about Kerry King is that he is just a genuinely nice person. And that’s but one of the reasons I was looking forward to the chance to sit down and chat with him backstage as Slayer rolled into Atlanta for the Jagermeister Fall Music Tour, which they are currently headlining.
Video Interview: Backstage with Slayer Guitarist Kerry King at the Jagermeister Fall Music Tour
I had a chance to ask Kerry King about the widespread rumor that he used Dimebag Darrell’s guitar, “The Dean from Hell,” on Slayer’s latest album, World Painted Blood and of “the guitars that got away.” We also discussed growing up under the influence of vinyl records and who he thinks does the best covers of Slayer songs. We talked about performing as well as winning, and losing, Grammy Awards and, of course, the snakes. No conversation with Kerry King would be complete without at least an update on his snake collection.
You can still catch Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax on the Jagermeister Fall Music Tour.
