The Women’s 2011 World Cup semifinals between France and the USA ended Wednesday with a 3-1 victory for the Americans in cool, drizzly Germany. The Americans have faced the French team 11 other times and won. On Sunday, Team USA will head into the World Cup Final to play Japan, who upset Sweden in Frankfurt, Germany, also by a score of 3-1.
Today’s FIFA game went two minutes into injury time but the USA team won without much fanfare, with no shootouts, no red cards, and without much possession of the ball. The French played a better ball game but the USA team scored more goals. It was not as dramatic as the game against Brazil in the quarterfinals, where American scorer Abby Wambach provided a dramatic overtime goal to tie Brazil, and the USA team ultimately won the game on penalty kicks.
All eyes will be on Sunday’s World Cup Final matchup between the USA and Japan. If the USA team wins, it will be its second World Cup title after first winning it all in 1999, when it turned key players like Mia Hamm and Brandi Chastain into worldwide superstars.
