TV Review: American Idol Finale – Forget Taylor Hicks, It Was All About Prince

Taylor Hicks is just a memory in what was yet another bad American Idol closer. When Taylor and Katherine sang “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life,” I felt like I was listening to someone scratch nails on a chalkboard. I was totally disappointed, but more than that, I don’t even care who won American Idol this season because last night was all about PRINCE!!

It was a total shock because I had read reports that Prince was going to be on American Idol, but then other reports said that he didn’t want to interact with the contestants. So when I heard the music, I was like “it can’t be Prince on Idol.” Then the doors slid open and out walked Prince doing “Lolita” before moving right into “Satisfied,” cuts off his new album 3121. Prince gave a killer performance and I loved the two girls who performed with him: they where hot, sexy, and spicy.

Katherine McPhee and Taylor Kicks will never ever be on the level that Prince is. Even at his age, 47, he looks not a day over 30; he can still dance his ass off and give a performance that everyone will be talking about. Taylor Hicks really got on my nerves; and the song he sang at the end of the show was horrible. I don’t know if he was just overwhelmed with joy, or pissed knowing that his album will soon be in the $2 CD bin. But whatever, he was totally out of tune when signing “Do I Make You Proud.”

No Talyor, you don’t. You make me think that America is on that Whitney Houston diet and totally out of their minds.

GG/Mike: I stayed away from last night’s episode (the way I have basically avoided the whole AI series but I would have made an exception to see Prince. Talk about putting the wannabes in their place. I wish I would have seen that.

  • http://www.zaldor.com Zaldor

I completely agree – it was quite a shock to see Prince on Idol – and I had no intentions on watching Idol last night, so that was a big surprise – and made me glad that I actually sat thru that horrible show… just to see Prince!

I still cannot believe that Taylor won… he was WAY off key on that last song, as well as other songs I heard him sing… horrible.

  • Steve

Last nights show just proved why Chris should have one. When he gave his performances he outshined everyone. This was by far the worst season of AI ever.

  • Brooke

WAY TO GO TAYLOR!!! WELL DESERVED!!!!

  • Charlie Rangel

It was a big surprize to see Prince but I thought he was horrible and boring. Radio play time and record sales will back me up that Purple Rain was a long long time ago. I think the best performer on stage was Chris who should have been the real winner. Even though Hicks is very easy to like he is a lounge singer at best. Chris is way above the rest.

  • khalan

I agree that Chris should have won. However, I think everyone is being a little overboard about Taylor winning. Let’s see, we have Taylor, who has a unique style that he stayed true to throughout the competition and the on stage experience with his own amateur band. then we have Kat who with all her “years of voice training” could not succeed in getting all the lines in the songs half the time. Great stage presence, good voice, NO REAL EXPERIENCE and could not hold it together under pressure. The only reason I see that she chose the songs she did for the final performances before the world voted for a winner was because she was sure she knew all the lines. They were a safety net. If it had to come down to the two of them then Taylor was the most reasonable winner. I am happy with the decision!
As far as watching this show goes…why not? Maybe you rather watch those stupid survivor shows or Unanymous or Mole or one of those stupid shows that are all about torturing people rather than something that gives people a way to live their dreams at doing something they are good at. Or maybe you do not like the idea of putting people out there that WON’T be a bad influence on our kids. THAT is another reason I am happy with Taylor’s win. Sexy, show off Kat or down to earth, respectful, respectable Taylor>>> Which would you want your kids to go to see in concert? Which would you allow your kids to listen too or their videos to see? I think this was the BEST season ever for AI. I still think it should have been Chris but it DOES NOT MATTER. He is already in contract talks and the top 12 GET CONTRACTS so he’s gonna be out there anyway! So realistically all you need to do is be among the top 12! Number one just gets a BIGGER contract, that is all.

  • Jim

    Who cares?????

  • http://greasyguide.com Greasy Guide

Reasonable? If I was a PR person for music I’d DIE trying to market that guy to the people that buy music. He is so off the curve and what can he sell? You have to be more then a singer you have to be a product. What of Taylor Hicks would I want to buy? NOTHING

  • Your_Future_Ex_Husband

I don’t think anyone sang worth a crap on that show EXCEPT Prince and maybe Clay… Mary J Blige sucked, I could barely listen to her screech, the dude she was singing with looked embarrassed!! All the other “stars” were equally as bad!!!

  • ann maxwell

I cannot beleve that americans are that deaf and enjoy watching Taylor Hicks———-I used to like American Idol—-now what is Paula on- and Randy you need to clean your ears– For Chris Rocked and Kat is marketable and can be groomed -but Taylor will be a one time not an idol like Kelly and Carrie!

  • John

It always amazes me when I hear people rip Idol. Obviously it is successful. Obviously the mainstream music scene has embraced it or you wouldn’t have seen Prince, Toni Braxton, and Mary J. Blige appear on it. Just as obviously Taylor is still an amatuer, without the luxary of having songs composed for his range and style and the backing of a studio full of technology (though that will soon change). And obviously Kelly Clarkson proves that idols can go on to success. I just don’t understand why people think it’s cool to rip it all of the time.

  • http://greasyguide.com Greasy Guide

#11 Don’t think that they came on there just cause “they like Idol.’ I’m sure each one of those celebs took home a NICE check and couldn’t careless who won.

  • Sour Grapes

Enjoying your sour grapes? He had the votes to win and he did. No one else did. Chris’ fans (that would be a couple of you psoting here right?) DID NOT vote for him. It’s a popularity contest. Move on and get over yourselves.

  • http://www.BusinessSecurity.org Teri

A few years ago a country singer friend and I used to go to Sam’s Town here in Vegas for Karaoke every week. When Idol began this season we instantly recognized Taylor Hicks from the Karoake nights as he used to sing there as well. We enjoyed his unique performances then as much as now. It felt like watching an old friend win the brass ring he struggled to grab. Way to go Taylor!

  • Deb

America got it right last night. Taylor has been fabulous all season. He might have been a little pitchy towards the end, but consider the excitement and what was at stake… Katherine was the same way. Can anyone really blame them? The difference between Taylor and EVERY other contestant this year is the fact that he actually lives and breathes music. It’s in his heart and soul. He deserved to win and I truly believe he’ll do America proud!

  • sansan

Yeah, Alabama for producing a great singer and a real personality in Taylor Hicks. I am soooooo glad the little “KAT” didn’t win. She really tries to be a sexy thing but her hips are too big and gawlky and she tries to dance too much during her performances. BIG TURNOFF!!!!! I know most dads are proud of their children, but come on, all those tears. Mothers are the ones that usually cry. Dad made a spectacle of himself. Wonder why they didn’t show his face when she LOST????? Hooray Taylor. You make me proud to be from Alabama.

  • steven

Very dissapointed in the final two
    these are NOT the best
I do agree that his music will be in the $2.00 bin soon

  • Miguel

Taylor was the best vocalist that has been on Idol. Certainly much better than the talentless Fantasia of two years ago.

This year, the choice was off-key Kathleen or whatever her name was and one trick pony Chris. Yes, Taylor might not have the image that you think an “Idol” should have, but as a singer, no one on the show could top him. Fact is, no singer who has been on the show has ever been better than the average Holiday Inn lounge act, and some (Fantasia, Aiken, Guarini, for example) were much worse.

  • Momof4

American Idol is a SCAM! They praised Kat for weeks and made her think she could not do anything wrong. They praised Chris the same way and when it started coming down to the end and producers saw who they wanted to win they must have told the judges to start weeding out people. Why have judges if we really get to vote. Why not let us decide for ourselved. Ever notice how everything Simon says always happens. If we had been able to choose for ourselves then who knows who would have won. I am sure it would not have been Taylor who looks like a 50 year old man. I consider AI to be something that would produce people like Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. Young, talented, STARS. AI has made a BAD CHOICE on a winner who will not provide them with the sales they are looking for. This is my last time watching this show. No More IDOL for me!

  • Valerie

Forget Taylor and Kat….. What was up with Toni Braxton?!?!?!

  • Suanceree

Ummmmm…let’s see. First off, Prince was as HOT last night as he is with every preformance! He was by far the best thing that could have happened to the show, I could have wacthed him for the entire hour! I wasn’t particularly excited about Kat or Taylor being the last two standing, but I’m glad Taylor won outta the two of them. I think Taylor will do the title justice once he finds the music perfect for his voice. Could it be that he’s the Micheal McDonald of our generation?

  • f-off

PRINCE CAN LICK MY ASS I AM SURE HE WOULD LIKE IT TOO THAT TRANSGENDER, MICE SOUNDING FREAK, HE SOUNDS LIKE A CAT WHOSE TAIL HAS BEEN STEPPED ON……I THINK PEOPLE MUST BE ON CRACK TO LIKE HIM CAUSE HE IS A DISGRACE TO WHAT A HUMAN SHOULD LOOK LIKE AND SOUND LIKE.

  • Me

I think America picked the perfect idol to represent us. An overweight, gray haired old man trying to be in his early 20’s. He looked ridiculous up there with all the other male contestants. I think Paula should wear a bib when she looks at him. She made a fool of herself. Kat was the better singer by far. She at least is marketable and has talent. She didn’t have to rely on spasmic dancing to win.

  • Hicks4President

Wow, this win has reassured me that American Idol is NOT a scam. Taylor Hicks will be a nightmare to market, especially to the younger generation. Who would have made the most money for Simon? Probably Chris. All in all, it’s refreshing to see someone who doesnt fit into everyone’s perception of what’s “popular” win. “On key” is subjective. Most people don’t even realize that “on key” is the biggest scam of human history, something of the order of mass brain-washing. Western diatonic scale is not the end all be all of all musical scaling. Some people should stop being critical of his musical aptitude when they’re just saying that Taylor doesnt fit into their perception of the musical “norm”.
Taylor Hicks who can sing Stevie Wonder songs in his own style, gets my vote as the best musical talent on AI this year.

  • Hicks4President

Taylor is 29 years old I believe. Far from being middle aged.

  • MANDY HICKS

I LOVED THE WHOLE SHOW! TAYLOR YOU ROCK.

  • http://greasyguide.com Greasy Guide

with that greay hair, out of shape body, and old man walk he could be someones grandpa…

  • Hicks4President

I love the GRAY hair, and you can always loose weight. You can’t learn talent. The fact that he looks the way he does, just means that he won on talent.

  • Andrew

    Prince rocked as always!

He had that hollyweird/idol audience going nuts-o
    as only he can do!

A real musician that can sign like no other

    3121

  • http://www.zaldor.com Zaldor

The fact that Taylor won also shows that Americans are brainwashed lemmings. They put out more votes for AI than they do for their own president, and they are more passionate about who the winner is or is not than they are about a war that we should not be involved in… what is the country coming to.

For the record, Taylor is a horrible singer, he’ll never have a hit, will never be played on radio past this summer, and he’ll be forgotten, just like Fantasia, Ruben, and that sideshow bob look alike… what was his name?? LOL

  • http://www.myspace.com/stefig1 StefiG

I just want to say I am proud of the American public for not letting Taylor’s gray hair and not so mainstream looks get in the way of becoming the American Idol. It gives me hope that people in this country are becoming more open minded and accepting of people regardless of their looks. Taylor made me smile every time he performed. I love him. He has passion, and love for music. I believe that is why he won.

  • Me

Well only time will tell who has the “real talent” when Kat is on the Billboard Charts at #1 and Taylor is in the $2 sale bin of CD’s as a no hit wonder.

  • Hicks4President

Wow, that sounds like a great idea for a movie… oh wait… Talk about brainwashed. It’s a singing competition. Taylor won. He’s not marketable, fine. But anyone who says he can’t sing or doesn’t have talent either wants to exaggerate or belinger the marketability point or has the musical aptitude of a field mice. And that would be a compliment.

  • Me

R u getting a kickback from Taylor? I never said he didn’t have talent. He does…as a Karaoke singer.

  • Bliffle

I didn’t watch Idol, as usual, but maybe I’ll catch a reprise with Prince. FWIW, the best music video I’ve ever seen is “Kiss”.

  • THE DON

I WANNA START BY ADDRESSING THE COMMENT MADE BY MIGUEL TOWARDS FANTASIA, “TALENTLESS” I THINK NOT! SHE WAS ONE OF THE BEST PERFORMERS THE IDOL HAS SEEN. SELLING MILLIONS! KEEP SILLY ASS COMMENTS LIKE THAT TO YOURSELF, NOONE BELIEVES THAT! AND FOR MR. “F-OFF” WHO PAST THE COMMENT AND BOUT PRINCE BEING A FREAK AND DISGRACE TO HUMANITY’ YOU NEED TO APPLY YOUR NAME TO WHAT U NEED TO DO, F*** OFF!!!! PRINCE IS A HELL OF A PERFORMER, HE MAY NOT DRESS OR LOOK LIKE WHAT THE STEROTYPICAL HETEROSEXUAL MALE SHOULD LOOK LIKE BUT HE MAKES DAMN GOOD MUSIC AND HE CAN DANCE HIS ASS OFF! YOU JUST HOPE YOU LOOK THAT GOOD AT 47! SOMETIMES YOU PEOPLE JUST DON’T NEED TO POST PERIOD! I THINK THE GREY HAIR BAMA BOI DESERVES TO WIN! SURE I THINK OTHERS ON IDOL THIS YEAR “VOCALLY” SOUNDED BETTER BUT IN THE END WHEN IT CAME DOWN TO MCPHEE AND HICKS, MY VOTE WAS FOR HICKS..

  • troy

I am not sure who the the reporter or writter of this article is or do i care,Prince was a joke he is a has been and he should have stayed where he was, maybe if he paid his state taxes in minnesota he would not have fallen off the map,he had 1 good song his movie sucked, and if taylor got lucky or whatever he worked his ass off to get that win,he stuck to his guns and you cant blame a guy for that,i agree i thought chris should have won also, but to say this show was all about Prince is a bullshit response from someone who maybe should go back to BET and come into the year 2006,your article is a letter that maybe you should have wrote to someone who gives a shit what you say, because i know if you had 63 million people reading your acticles maybe your dumb @ss would not be writting on line.

  • troy

Well i wrote what i felt and they of curse would not print it,becasue they dont want me to hurt the writter of this articles feelings, but prince was awful coud not understand a word he said then you never could anyway, the writter of this article knows even less about talent,Taylor worked hard he deserved to win,i also liked chris i thought he should have won but i am glad for taylor,Idol did Prince a favor even letting him perform we all thought he was dead, and with his songs he sang last night he should have remaned there.I guess BET knew what they were doing for once.

  • http://www.joanhallhovey.com Joan

It was a terrific show. Thoroughly entertaining. If Elliott Yamin could not win, then I’m glad Taylor did! He’s great. And what a treat to see and hear Clay Aiken. That was a special moment, and funny. No one was terrible as I’ve reading in some of these posts; that’s ludicrous – all talented young people. Just a few thoughts from an appreciative Canadian.

  • http://greasyguide.com Greasy Guide

Troy: Grow Up! I’ve been in the music industry for over a long time and I make a hell of a lot more writing and doing video online then the 30-35K they’d offer you at some magazine. You need to step into 2006 and learn the reach of the internet. The music industry is dead and so is BET.

As for Taylor Hicks I’ll hold my comments until his album comes out but I’ve never been wrong about who will sale and who won’t. If he sells a million that would be only on the strength of him being on national TV. He’s no Kelly Clarkson!

  • http://paperfrigate.blogspot.com DrPat

Anyone catch the total spoiler report by MSNBC radio yesterday during drive-time of Taylor Hicks as the American Idol winner? The local host in the SF Bay area came on right afterward with an apology for the spoiler, which was part of the network news feed they are required to play.

He speculated that NBC was trying to steal audience from the popular program by letting out the results early. (And maybe Prince defeated that attempt by being, however hot or not, THERE.)

  • Gretchen Mora

It amazes me how many of you are SOOO judgemental and yet funny I never saw any of you on national tv trying to fullfill your dreams…grey-haired….chunky…this would desrcibed how many millions of americans who will never get any farther than a dead end job.. HHmmmm….. Way to go Taylor!…..love a good underdog & great guy come out on top….

  • http://adamantsun.blogspot.com SteveS

It amazes me how many of you are SOOO judgemental

that’s the ‘critics’ part of blogcritics.

People rationalize Mandisa leaving because America won’t accept her weight. If you look at some of the talented singers during the initial rounds who don’t make the cut because they are effeminate men or lumpy women, you’re told that it’s because an Idol is a whole package, looks, personality and voice.

Taylor Hicks does not look like an American Idol. But neither did Clay or Reuben.

So the ‘looks’ criteria only applies to some and not to everybody.

  • troy

grease guy i dont know what the hell they pay you or do i care, but if youmake remarks like Taylor Hicks sounds like someone scrathing their nales on a chalk board or that Prince stole the show then you are paid way to much,Prince sounded like crap Taylor worked his butt of whether he sells a million records or not he earned what he got,and for some no name idiot to say what you said you deserve my remarks,I beleive Prince album will be in the $2.00 bins where it belongs.I also seemed to remember a guy named Michael Bolton who i thought, sucked made millions singing the same way when no one said he would make a buck,so before you put someone down for trying to live out a dream, try to remmeber what it was like when you needed someone to give your (AWESOME WRITTING) a chance. And i am sorry you might be a big Prince fan but he sounded like crap.

  • Mike

What song did Chris sing with Live?

  • troy

wow never been wrong you must lead a hell of a life to have never been wrong, damn i am so sorry grease i will put a call into Russell Simmons right now because he has to hire you, damn if you never been wrong he has to have you,can save him millions alone in auditions,he can just ask your advice since you have never been wrong, and if he dont call you i will put a call into P DiDDY for you,and as far as $30k i spend more than that a year in sports memorablia,i may not know alot about music talent per say,but i ben in the Bar Business for 21 years and for them 21 years i have heard them all,and i know what people like, and it is all diffrent, what makes one man happy doesnt always make another, but as longas someone likes it,who cares, and 63 million votes seems like someone like it.

  • Brett

Prince WAS talented, back in the day, but his recent stuff is just a shadow of his former work. No one ever accused A.I. of producing talented singer/songwriters, so comparing Prince to either Hicks or McPhee, each of whom probably have the potential for more broad-based appeal than Prince ever did in his panty-wearing days, is a ridiculous waste of time.

  • karl

when 60 millions people vote for an event, more than 20 millions more watched and didn’t vote. you’re talking about 100 millions for something people judge as ridiculous. i wished that my loved show on tv drained that many people. stop guys, i’m talking about people who only criticize and don’t do nothing to make a change. taylor won, he was good or not is not important. he’ll have a better life even if his cd will end up in the $2 rack, he doesn’t care. he did what he was supposed to be doing and people like him. out of 60 millions he surely got more than 50% i let you do the math. if this guy can’t sing I don’t know who can sing

  • forever_unique06

This was bond to happen, i knew from the very beginning a white man was going to win. to me it seems as though they are following a pattern, white woman, black man, black woman, white woman, white man, watch next year another black woman is going to win wheter she good or not that’s just how it is with AI

  • http://www.geocities.com/powerscore KB

I have to say…I’ve watched AI as a guilty pleasure for two years. I watched last year because of Bo Bice. I continued to watch this year because of Taylor Hicks. It was nice to see someone I like actually win something. Taylor has the talent to go far, whether or not he sells millions of albums. In fact, most of the artists I like don’t sell boat loads of cd’s and top Billboard. I’d rather listen to an artist of substance and passion than an image, which is why Taylor is a TRUE American Idol. He doesn’t fit the cookie cutter design that Cowell and his cronies would like. Still, he’d better not drop the ball with this one. Taylor’s voice deserves to be heard. He’s the only winner on this show with a true sense of self…uncompromising and clear headed. It’s the mark of a true MUSICIAN, something none of the others can claim.

  • forever_unique06

This was bond to happen, i knew from the very beginning a white man was going to win. to me it seems as though they are following a pattern, white woman, black man, black woman, white woman, white man, watch next year another black woman is going to win wheter she good or not that’s just how it is with AI and fantasia is not talentless, and for those who think she is are crazy, because kelly clarkson is good but i have heard better, when fantasia sings you want to listen, kelly is just another singer that has some hits has some nots so don’t put her on some kind of pedastool above all the other idols, because if you remember that season tamyra grey had more talent then kelly yet she was voted off, like some of you have said it’s a popularity contest

  • Teri

Just heard that Katherine was asked by Tom Cruise to sing at his wedding. Since Katherine is practically next door to ‘Hollywood,’their already calling her. She’ll probably be like another Clay Aiken who is next successful after Clarkson.

  • Amazing1672

So you don’t like Taylor Hicks or the whole cheesy American Idol franchise/ movement? The first question that comes to mind is – why do you care to watch and then post your views online. Is it that in some way, AI is giving you some guilty pleasure that you hate to admit you enjoy?

As for Taylor Hicks – he deserves every bit of the AI title he got. He came in like a breath of fresh air unlike the I-am-so-bad-I-am-going-to-scream-throw-the-mic-around-Kid Rock wannabe or the Barbie-Brittany-Whitney wannabes that America is full of. He may look old, he may not have the body of a Hollywood hunk – but man does he know how to have a good time. The passion for music oozes out of him as he performs and I will be honest with you – I’d rather see that than anything else on TV.

  • girlfriend

Chris would not have won because ‘mainstream’ America do not go for ‘hard rockers.’ Also, he did auditioned for CBS’s “Rock Star” and never even made it past the audition. Now, if he was like Bo Bice, it would be a completely different story. Chris will be a star no matter what. I hope he stays with ‘Absent Element,’ because its close to home n family.

  • Josh

Everybody basing Hicks on his looks: Come off it you pretentious asses. Who says you have to look young? The guy can sing, that’s all that counts. Besides, the gray hair is actually kind of cool, admit it.

Everybody bashing Hicks on his voice: Just because he doesn’t sing with that nasally man-boy N’Sync style voice you love so much, don’t trash him. His voice is great and unique, and he’s got soul, which is the most important thing. If he can get the emotion across and hit the notes. what’s the problem?

    I hate music snobs.

  • hannah smolkin

The final song is never supposed to be performed well. Hasn’t it occured to people that winners are TIRED and they have been working brutally? Even Kelly Clarkson did terrible when it was announced that she was the winner, and we all know that she can sing amazing. Announcing the winner just puts closure to all the work everyone has had to put up with: numerous auditions, lack of support from people around them, and scrutiny when what they needed was praise..It is all over now and it must be a huge relief!..So forgive people for taking a much deserved break after they probably have to go straight back to work again. Plus no one knows the emotion that goes behind winning the American idol; it is more about the fans and disbelief by this point. Im sorry but all that matters is the work leading up to gaining the title and taylor did the most fantastic job to that very song the night before which, without out a doubt, earned him the American idol.

    etta

  • Someone

I personally don’t care who one the only CD that I will buy from American Idol is from the person who should have won and that was Chris

  • Lady “T”

Taylor is a talented man and feels each song he sings through his soul. Get over it those of you who choose to be negative about a person who fullfilled his dream and made it a reality. He truly is BLESSED!!!!!!!!!

  • lillie

I love the show and Taylor deserve to win.Prince did great as usual.Fantasia is a great singer.God Bless Ruben,Fantasia,Kelly, the winner last year and Taylor!

  • Amazing1672

Also to all those Chris fans – Bo Bice should have won last year but did not – big deal!! If it isn’t in you to give him the votes, it isn’t in him to become American Idol. Have you forgotten that people vote and make an American Idol – that is the whole premise behind the show. If you don’t vote, and the other guy has fans who do – tell me who deserves to win the title?

  • TW

You call yourself a journalist? Thank God you arent a music critique because you’d be fired. If you can put someone down then I cant see why we cant!!!!!

  • heather

yeah, yeah, yeah, chris should have won, but he didn’t. so, next in line was taylor. he’s a great guy & great performer. it’s not like katharine isn’t going to have plenty of work lined up for her– at playboy.
if your pissed about the winner, you probably should have voted and didn’t. so get over it.
focus on the real idiot last night: toni braxton. was she drunk or on crack? i was completely and utter embarrassed watching that.
    what an ass.

  • troy

FOREVER UNIQUE WONDER IF YOU ARE A BLACK GUY ALWAYS SOMEONE HAS TO THROW RACE INTO EVERYTHING AND TAMYRA GRAY COULD NOT HAVE WON IF SHE WAS THE ONLY PEFORMER PICKED SHE WAS NO WHERE AS GOOD AS KELLY NOT IN YOUR WILDEST DREAMS AND THATS WHY SHE WAS SENT HOME,AND IT IS A POPULARITY CONTEST YOU MORON THE MORE PEOPLE THAT LIKE YOU THE MORE VOTES YOU GET IS THAT NOT AMAZING THEY LIKE ME I WIN WHAT A CONCEPT,THIS SHOW IS ALL ABOUT GIVING SOMEONE A CHANCE WHO OTHER WISE WOULD NEVER GET ONE AND I AM GLAD TO SEE IT WEATHER THEY ARE BLACK OR WHITE OR YELLOW OR GREEN,THIS SHOW DOES HELP SOME PEOPLE BUT THIS SHOW HELPS ITSELF THE MONEY IT BRINGS IN IS AMAZING AND GIVING AWAY A RECORDING CONTRACT AND A COUPLE CARS THEY COULD GIVE AWAY 1 MILLION CARS AND STILL MAKE A YEARKY PROFIT,BUT LIKE I SAID IF IT ALSO HELPS SOME TALENTED PEOPLE REACH THEIR GOALS THEN I AM HAPPY FOR THEM,I AM JEOULOS I CANT SING WORTH A DARN,BUT GOOD LUCK TO YOU TAYLOR I WILL GET YOUR CD AS SOON AS IT HITS THE STAND,AND FOR YOU GREASY GUIDE RUSSELL SIMMONS SAID HE WILL PASS EVEN THOU YOU ARE NEVER WRONG. • http://www.straightwear.vstore.ca Mike

Let’s be honest….America got Taylor Hicks there in the first place. Everyone of you morons who thought he had a stage performance and voted for him apparently don’t mind seeing a “Jay Leno” look alike with a record deal.
The writer/editor was right….he sounded horrible singing that classic 80,s song. I was in the other room when my wife was watching it and I screamed” Oh my god who is that?” “That’s horrible!” Way to go America!!! You picked a real gem!

  • Matt D

Taylor Hicks will sell more records Prince, when all is said and done. Write it down, you heard it hear first. If you can’t see that, you don’t understand the industry.

  • Jim

For me, that performance Chris had with the guy from Live was offputting. They looked just alike and Chris seemed to be aping all his mannerisms.

Elliott gave me chills in his duet with Mary J. Blige and his version of “A House is not a Home”. How did he not win? I hope he has a lot of success after the show.

    Katharine – glad she lost.

  • #67 Kate

This years AI reminds me a LOT of the ending of Reuben couldn’t sing on key, and Clay Aiken who everyone knew should have won. He is now nipping at the heels of Kelly Clarkson in sales, and his tours have outsold hers and made tripple the money she has made. Can’t believe the sex kitten comments made about Katherine McPhee – she has a gorgeous voice; G-d gave her those curves; and as for the just plain mean comments about her dad crying, doesn’t anyone remember those famous words “daddy’s little girl?” She was unbelievably gracious when Taylor received the title, as was Clay when he too was “robbed” as Ruben won the title “American Idol.” The true mystery is the judges. America votes, but at some point for reasons only they understand, they change the “wow you walk on water” comments to the other guy and I have to think the voters are just stupid enough to figure they must be right, especially because Simon is sooooo brutally “not quite honest.” Everyone should just wish all the performers well, and if you can’t stand the transparency of the judges and the affect they have on the audience, then just stop watching as they keep raking in billions!

Oh yeah, The duets of Ed and EdClone and Clay and ClayClone were just surreal. Very strange.

WAY TO GO PRINCE!!! TAYLOR WISHES HE COULD SELL AS MANY RECORDS AS PRINCE.THE MAN HAS REAL TALENT SOMETHING I HAVEN’T SEEN MUCH OF THESE DAYS!! HE COMPOSES,PRODUCES,DIRECTS HIS OWN MUSIC AND VIDEOS AND PLAYS LIKE 7 INSTRUMENTS!!! I WAS REALL LOOKING FOWARD TO A CHRIS AND ELLOIT FACE-OFF!!! BOTH OF THEM ARE SO MUCH MORE TALENTED THAN THE THESE TWO!!!

  • http://Sad Sad

The judges put on a great performance dont you think?Trying to sway the votes in Taylors corner.
Well I cant tell you enough how wrong you people
were for voting the way Simon,Paula and Randy ask to do.The momof4 was right(scam)the man was
not and still not good enough to have gone onto
round 2. Also, if you people dont know you can call more than once using the home phone and your cell.I just don`t beleive 60 million
people watched or called what a boost.I cant say I will be a fan after this, but maybe I should try out I cant do any worse I`m sure!

What a waste of time…we knew who the winner was 2 episodes ago! Taylor…man you can blow those bluesy harp. I loved it. Congrats.

  • Beth

Funny…all the BOOOOOO’s and hate towards Taylor comes from men/boys…???

Taylor had ‘this something’…..guess, men/boys can jaloux at that.

Well, too much muzak can make you toneDeaf…don’t even recognize a true soul when you meet one.

    I went to Taylor’s page. Message-page.
He had thousands of love-letters from women that just loved his song…some just loved HIM and wanted to marry him…;)

Taylor didn’t appear as a smartAss-guy. Maybe it’s his honesty you hate???

That special something is not for all to hear.
Especially when you work on a level that only care about hair-colour.

We live in a superficiel world.
Glitter and fake can really turn people on;)
    and along came Taylor,
soulful and warm…with his gray hair.

And with a voice superMasculin, sexy, strong and warm.

And of course all these millions of voters must be wrong.
    ……………..
    SweetTaylorHicks. Don’t ever change.
The world is overcrowded with smartAss-people.

and we can’t fight hate and jalouxy.
Only ignore, knowing there’s a limit for intelligence….but none for stupidity.

This review is one of the most amusing I have read to date. Usually an author of an article will at the very least TRY to conceal their ignorance.

While I agree that Taylor and Kats duet was not at all good, it was the very FIRST time Taylor has missed a note all season. (can’t say the same for Kat).

Plus, look at the other live performances that night. Tony Braxton….aweful. Meatloaf….aweful. Even the legendary Dionne hit a few sour notes. Maybe it was a sound system issue….who knows.

If you don’t like Taylor Hicks, that is your own opinion. However, you apparently are in the VAST minority with the American Idol viewers. To avoid looking like an idiot in the future, it might be in your best interest not to try and predict the future in regards to Taylors CD sales. Even top record producers do not have that sort of insight. It will all depend on the material handed to him. If they try to mold him into a pop star like they have Bo Bice…..you could be right. On the other hand, if he is given the choice, I’m sure his CD will be full of that rich soul sound America fell in love with.

By the way, Prince did a decent job. It’s just unfortunate that his “has-been” status has forced him to appear on a talent show. He must REALLY need to promote that CD, afterall, he Purple Rain was many many years ago…..before I had childen OR grandchildren. The buyers today will not remember him. Let’s hope he made a good impression with the little girls who parents give them plastic.

You can actually watch video of the performance right here on BC as well.

  • Corinna

Honestly, I thought it should have been Taylor and Elliott in the finals together. Both of them can sing and it comes from their hearts. Katharine, she has a beautiful voice, no one can deny that, but, I was glad she did not win. I actually thought Mandisa would go farther than Kat. Chris, yes everyone thought he would be in the finals, but he is not going to have anything to worry about, whether he strikes out on his own or joins a group, he will be successful. I am glad Taylor won it, he deserved it.

  • rodney

I enjoyed the show, and am glad that Taylor won. However I think that Chris and Mandisa were by far the better singers. The main guy who gave his review above is bitter, Prince was ok, but so outdated. For being such a bitter Prince fan he needs to learn how to spell the word singing. That makes everything he wrote sound ignorant.

  • http://oldieone oldie one

Taylor I`m sure is a nice guy,but have you not seen how they had to add someone older whether
they be male or female talented or not.So as not to appear to be one sided choosing only young
auditioners they decided I guess on a less talented Taylor, what a shame so many good talent
was passed up just because they saw an older audiaunce has now tuned in.

  • http://none Anonymous

We all wished Kat’s the winner. Can’t stand Taylor’s dance which he had to inject into every song he sings. Does he look an Idol? And Chris certainly performs better.

  • http://gratefuldread.net NR Davis

Who is “we?” Clearly NOT the majority of those who cast votes for the man who is season five’s American Idol. It’s a fait accompli. I recall how I felt when Underwood won last year, so you have my sincere sympathy. But really, in the vast scheme of things, second place is great. Bo Bice is doing well – he says his dreams have come true and he’s providing a comfortable life for his new spouse and son. Kat McPhee will be fine, and she knows it and she is grateful. (And frankly, her post-finale comments are the only things that have come from her mouth that I find believable, unlike the words that came from her mouth when she was singing.)

  • zingzing

oldie one: if a black person wins, it racism. a white person, racism. a woman, sexism. a man, sexism. and older guy, agism. blah, blah, blah. stop it. they all sucked. none of them could sing. and none of them would mean shit to you if they weren’t on some dumb tv show.

  • Jim

who is the queer hack that started this blog?
both Kat and Taylor will be around a LONG time!

    you people are pitiful!
    remember…

Those who can do… those who cant or dont have the balls to try, just criticize

  • Steph

Taylor is authentic, or at worst *comes across* as authentic. What do we know about Kat, or Chris, or any of them? Kat in particular was so affected and plastic that even though she was one of my early favorites, I didn’t know a thing about her as a person by the end of the show. And that, folks, is why people watch.. we think we get to know these contestants a little, and by the end it’s like watching our friends compete. Lame? Sure. Fun? Heck yeah!

I’ve bought Tay’s older CD ‘Under the Radar’ (the older old one isn’t available) and he wrote a lot of the songs on it, AND they’re good, AND he performs them well. I’ve preordered his single even though I don’t like the song, because I’m voting with my pocketbook just to prove the naysayers wrong.

Can’t wait until Taylor tours Hawaii.. I’ll be there even if I have to fly to Oahu, which I probably will.

I wish the other contestants success (especially Elliott) but the last four months, for me, were all about Taylor, and I am thrilled he won! And rightfully so if you ask me (and the majority of Idol voters).

He’s hot, he’s talented, he unique, he’s passionate about music, he’s paid a lot of dues, he’s not a barbie-doll 19 y/o teen idol.. hell yeah, I love him!

  • PR

Congrats to the gray one… WELL DONE ! ! !
As for some of the others on the show – – Some were good, some better and some not so good but,
they all made it to the big sing off….
Looks – that is only skin deep/WHAT is under the skin is what counts. opps sorry bout that, forgot some folks cannot count..
To ALL who don’t like the gray hair/heavysetones/
curves one has/forgets the song lines/sings off key/be they white/black/brown/yellow/ OR whatever
    — The answer is so simple~~~~`Every one sings BEHIND
“blackout screens” = NO ONE sees the singers PERIOD…. That way votes are made for the singing NOT for being white/black/with OR without curves ….. Judges still can make thier comments, aahhhh, ooohhhhhs or whatever !!
You will see the Last two standing on the night
someone is “crowned the A.I.” and only then….

  • http://SAM Sam

I`t looks to me by all your comments that A.I
has nothing left to offer in entertainment. Also what good are the three
judge critics if their opinions mean nothing
after the auditions, our votes are the only ones that count from then on.I say be rid of them or consider calling the show the American Idol soap
    Opera.

  • http://blogcritics.org/mt/tb/48294 Julia

I agree whole-heartedly with this review. I don’t particularly care for Taylor, but Prince totally kicked everyone’s butt. #1 on the charts, baby! Go Prince, you rock! \m/

  • http://pooh pooh

I guess we all had nothing better to do
those two nights, oh pooh.well at least
the last ten minutes of the shows.

  • pg

prince rules- even if you don’t like him or think his older stuff is better…. it obviously is, but it doesn’t mean he should stop entertaining because he still does it better than um- everyone. most people were excited as hell to see him as they should be. he makes singing, dancing, writting, playing look effortless. who else is on that level? if you think madonna or even micheal is- you are quite wrong so go do your homework.

  • DoesItMatter

Well i peronally dont care for Taylor yeah his voice is ok But Kat can saaaaaaaaang!…An im so tired of that man jumpin around on the stage i mean dang put his azz in the circus or some shyt!!!!!

  • http://Patty Patty

Oh, you bet the man (Prince)still got it,what
a shame that anyone would try to knock him he`s
gone far. I realy dont believe those on the
show will get anywhere near his or the other
high profile entertainers statuse except for
maybe Kelly Clarkston. So just enjoy this short
lived tv program its now I believe on its way
    out.

  • Natalie

Hmmmm? Since when could Prince sing? Wow! This is news to me.

I would rather fall in a hole and starve before I bought one of Prince’s CDs. Although I would stand in line to buy Taylor’s. Taylor is awesome!

  • True Music Lover

Taylor Hicks paid his dues. No one ever said American Idol was for the young. American does not mean young. It is about time that the show put on some who could appeal to others than just pop/rock. Why is the thing about Taylor’s hair and dancing so upsetting to so many? I never understood that about Elvis, The Beatles or so many other early misunderstood artists. Taylor was/is the best entertainer the show has ever seen. People who followed Taylor will buy his CDs and they will pay to see him perform live. All the bashing should stop. He won; Kat didn’t; Chris didn’t; Taylor did. The bashers should get a life and congratulate Taylor on a job well done. And remember, American Idol doesn’t just mean young; it means American. I will see you all while I watch Taylor’s single climb the chart! CONGRATS TAYLOR!

  • melanie

Taylor Hicks can sing, remember lyrics, and perform for the audience, that is why he won. He was the best performer and he strikes a chord with mainstream America. Taylor is the average guy who could have been happy singing in a bar with his band but because of Idol he now will be heard all over. It was great to see him win. He has the kind of voice that many of the great performers, Ray Charles, Michael Mcdonald, etc. have. Prince has nada on Taylor. I would buy any album Taylor puts out, I wouldn’t spend $1.00 for any box set of Prince’s recordings, just not appealing to me at all.

  • http://JADA JADA

Taylor won due to people liking him,
not because of talent but because he was
different. There is no way he could become
anything great unless he took major singing
lessons and I dought even then ,he was 0k.
As for Katherine, she was a better singer
but still needs alittle more work. I believe the show is what it`s called american idol not
american talent. Its just a popularity contest,
not who can sing but who gets the sympathetic
    votes.

  • khalan

I have to agree. It is a popularity and charisma contest more so than talent, though that also counts greatly. However, I have to say that there are those such as Ray Charles, Joe Cocre, and others with non-melodic, rough voices that are now industry icons. I personally do not like any of them but agree with the concept that being different from everyone else gets attention. Taylor is VERY good and I’m sure would have been perfectly happy doing what he has always done with singing in bars with his own band BUT it is THAT experience that got him where he is and KAT had none of that. Practice does not neccessarily make perfect in this case but it sure got Taylor the win. I say GOOD FOR TAYLOR!!!!!!!He deserved the win over Kat. However I will also say that Chris was equally deserving and that is why the whole “only one big winner” thing sucks AND why they have the smaller contracts set up for the others who make top 12. Thank goodness for that, otherwise there would be a-lot of wasted talent out there who never get this chance. I’m so glad they do it this way.

  • khalan

As far as ripping on the show, I think those people contradict everything they say. If you think about it, they would have nothing to rip on if they did not watch the show. Ratings my friends, that is what it is all about. I agree that the show has put out more failures as the big winners than those who are up there BUT if you notice, for every one failed AI, there are at least 2 lesser top 12’s that are out there now and doing well. Some may not know this if they only focus on one breed of music but those of us who listen to a variety know it. I also think some people dump on the show because they are just sick of the whole reality tv rage. Or maybe even they are jealous because it isn’t them out there doing something so huge and fun. They are stuck in their same ole’ same ole’ life and resent those who have the freedom to try to expand their horizons. I commend every single person who dares to at least try out for the show. Even the truely untalented. They obviously have more spirit and guts than the rest of us and I used to sing in public for a living. Also, do not get me wrong, the comments about those who are stuck in their boring lives was NOT an insult. I am one of those people now. family, job, etc. BUT I also respect those who want more. The bottom line is this. DO NOT CRITICIZE THOSE WHO DO IF YOU DO NOT!!!! There is no excuse for that kind of hipocracy!!!!!!!

  • khalan

One more thing. As far as the whole performance of “I Had the Time of My Life” is concerned, it sounded better when tayler and Kat did it than from the original artists. I personally hate rough, scratchy voices, except that from Michael mcDonald. That performance was not GREAT but it was good! Kat’s rendition of “Over the Rainbow” was atrocious and gut wrenchingly aweful and I hope she never sings it again! She is NO Judy Garland!!!!

  • khalan

Sansan Gotta agree about the dad thing. Way too much emotion. However, it may have been over the top but I think it is good to see fathers who are so obviously proud of their kids. Dad’s get a-lot of flack in this world for their relationships (or lack there-of) with their kids so I think from that stand point all the emotion was a good thing. I still think it was over the top but not drastically so. On the other side of it, I think it interesting that not only did they give Kat a farewell performance at the end of the show but I have yet to see an episode of AI extra for her as was the case with ALL the others. There are a great many raised eyebrows over that one. I personally do not care whether or not she got all that but I am curious as to why not her when everyone else got it????? I do not like Kat, at all, but I have to say that is not fair at all.

  • Reesa-Roo

Taylor is awesome. You can have a voice like Whitney Houston and if you just stand there and don’t feel the music and let the music shine through you, no one will enjoy your performance. It’s American Idol…you have to have a balance of good things…Taylor was the only one who had it. So Taylor won. Also, I wasn’t a Jazz/Blues fan until Taylor…I’m a 22 year old that used to like everything but jazz/blues…the fact that Taylor could appeal to people my age (also the people who buy the most music), is amazing. I’d also like to remind everyone here, that’s talking crap about Taylor, that the vote was based on what WE viewers wanted. The majority of us voted for Taylor, majority rules so get over it! (FYI: Also, Prince isn’t all that great…none of my friends really like him…none of us will be buying his album…let’s face it…he has a dead career that he’s trying to revive by being on American Idol…sorry Prince, it didn’t work. Let your career die with some dignity).

  • markbar

Yes Prince is amazing. He has been for YEARS! But, why do you people think he went on idol? to be SEEN. I guarantee you Elvis Costello would NEVER go on idol. It does have a certain Cheese factor, so as great as Prince is….come on….he performed on idol for one reason and one reason only….To Promote himself. Taylor is amazing and you should here his original material. The Tyler music Group has 3 of his ORIGINAL songs that are unbelievable. I have the CD. It’s the true Taylor. He has to do what they tell him on idol. It’s geared towards pop music. He will have the chance I hope to cut some original, soulful music like what The Tyler music group did with him and I guarantee you he will do well if he sticks with how Will Smith produced him and not Clive Davis “the mashine”. Taylor is bigger than Prince at this moment in time. So we must know this and you must hear these 3 songs that are out there right now. They will be a collectors item some day! Peace out people.

  • YouGotOneThingRight

I really doubt Taylor would ever go the “sex sells” road. So when you said Taylor’s not going to be Prince, you got that right.

    Taylor’s all about music.

  • YouGotOneThingRight

On that note, seeing Prince still going for the sex appeal with his songs is kind of laughable.

  • Autumn

    Taylor deserved to win….case closed.

All you who disagree, don’t watch Idol next season…oh, and one more thing….get a life and clean out your ears.

  • DJ

I agree that Taylor Hicks shold not have one season 5 of American Idol, but I watch the show and I saw a mini – Fantasia. Paris, to me seems like another version of Fantasia. Yes, she has the talking voice that when she speaks to you, you just want to choke her, but when she sings, she sounds like a R&B version of Shania Twain. Though I believe if Idol wanted another male to win American Idol, it should have been Elliot Yamin and if they wanted a female to win a third year in a row, it should have been Mandisa. Look at the past season, Simon has talked about Mandisa being the best female vocalist that they have ever had on the past 5 seasons, and he has said that Elliot was the best male vocalist that they have had the past 5 seasons, and I agree with Simon 100%. Sure, Simon can be asshole but he knows his talent. My opinion, if they wanted 2 female finalist: Mandisa and Paris, 2 males: Elliot and Chris, male and female: Mandisa and Elliot. I admit, Chris can sing, but he should not have been chosen for season 5 American Idol.
