Tru Calling stuck on repeat

For the best indication of what Fox TV thinks of Joss Whedon, you just have to look at “Tru Calling“. Starring Eliza Dushku, this series bootstrapped itself from her character Faith on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel”.

With the announcement that BtVS would be ending in 2003, there was speculation a Faith spin-off akin to “Angel” would be next, especially since the character played a role in both BtVS and Angel in the past season.

But no, however, the premise for “Tru Calling” is interesting, and Eliza Dushku is highly watchable (and with her role in “City By The Sea” a promising actor). The premise is Tru Davies, while trying to get in medical school, works in a morgue, and saves people who Die Before Their Time (tm) by repeating the day over (ala “Groundhog Day”). Seven episodes in, it is apparent they have bought into the concept of repeating a day, every friggin’ episode is exactly the same, a mad-lib run amok. The show needs to go to AA, where they define insanity as repeating the same thing expecting a different outcome. It was bad enough the pilot ripped off “Run Lola Run”, but dumber, but to do it every ep is just insulting.

Now, here’s the deal (since every episode begins with Tru in bed), how about she spends a day off lounging around her immense apartment in her undies, and then repeats the day with different undies? I’d watch that, but won’t be watching anything else in this series (which has been picked up for the rest of season).
