Tristania – Not Sad… But a Wee Bit Deathy

Tristania do a wonderful line in female-fronted (with two male co-singers) death metal, much harder live than they are on CD.

I understand from fans of the Norwegian band that this CD marks a slightly more mainstream direction for the band. Think of a death metal Evanescence or a harder and darker Nightwish.

Ashes is only 7 tracks and 42 minutes long, but there is no filler to be found. It is clear that that their countrymen Therion have an influence on the band. If you are looking for a excellent introduction to the female vocals in European death metal, then this lot are definitely the place to start.

Yet another decent metal band from the cold north of Norway. What exactly do they put in the water up there? Could Tristania be about to the lead a new wave of Norwegian heavy metal? Time will tell.

Just to update you on how many Music Genre’s there are…bands like Tristania, Sirenia…anyone that sounds like that Isn’t Death Metal…that is what you call Gothic Metal…Poetic Lyrics with Accompaniment of a Violin and Piano is no where near death metal…That is what you call Gothic Metal…Death Metal is bands Like Morbid Angel..with hardly Understandable Vocals…if you like…I can Update you on EVERY Genre out there…I just hate how people can Call one this Death Metal or Black Metal…and it not be either…If you really look into it…you’ll find out what they are…Women don’t do death metal like that Unless its Arch Enemy or Otep…and their style of Vocals are way different compared to the Opera type vocals of Tristania…they are Gothic Metal or what alot of ignorant people would do is place them in the “Nu-metal” catigory…which shouldn’t even be a catigory
    ….thank you.

I would be careful with using the word “ignorant”.

Sorry Sage I bet differ with you about this lot…and so does their record company. The PR mentions death explicitly and their older albums were even more deathy.

You are looking at it from an American perspective, I understand. However the genre of death metal is no where near as specific in the rest of the world. Death metal is defined by their subject matter as well. Oh yes, and a Norwegian fan of the band says they are considered death in north.

Death metal does not always entail blokes growling over loud guitars and drums. It can have keyboards, female vocals, choirs, harps etc etc…

    Tristania not sad…

    But what is sad is:
    – Comparing Tristania to Nightwish and Evanescence, because they have a lead female vocalist

    – Calling them a deaht metal band, and saying that The PR mentions death explicitly and their older albums were even more deathy,
While the band themselves said this is their heaviest album yet

    – Calling this paragraph a “Review” or an “Article”, it doesnt eveen say anything about the songs

    – Therion aren’t their “countrymen” they are from sweden, although they are good friends.

    – Saying Ashes is only 7 tracks and 42 minutes long, While Ashes really is 9 Tracks and 56 Minutes, But 2 Tracks werent released in the Promo CD

    Just to name a few…

    – Comparing Tristania to Nightwish and Evanescence, because they have a lead female vocalist

Well it does help to compare with similar bands. And yes the fact there are female vocals involved is relevant. You know there are some people who don’t like them. Comparting those three bands is entirely relevant.

    – Calling them a deaht metal band, and saying that The PR mentions death explicitly and their older albums were even more deathy,
While the band themselves said this is their heaviest album yet

So what exactly is your point?

    – Calling this paragraph a “Review” or an “Article”, it doesnt eveen say anything about the songs

Never realised there was any set way to write a review. You would think, as I have been reviewing stuff in print and online for over 15 years, someone might have told me that.

    – Therion aren’t their “countrymen” they are from sweden, although they are good friends.

    Yeah, I goofed on that.

    – Saying Ashes is only 7 tracks and 42 minutes long, While Ashes really is 9 Tracks and 56 Minutes, But 2 Tracks werent released in the Promo CD

    Just to name a few…

Well I can hardly review something that isn’t on there can I? Besides the fact I reviewed the UK version of the CD which only has 7 tracks on it.

    ZOMG TORRENT PLS!!

This review is ridiculous. Andrew does a terrible job. Therion is NOTHING like Nightwish. Yes, they both have female singers, but the sound, and emotion of the music is totally different.

How about saying that therion is like the Beatles because they both make use of male singers? So bigoted and ignorant

I said that Therion have an influence in Tristania not Nightwish. It helps if you read it slowly so you can comprehend what I am saying.
