King Khan’s on the rampage, er, on tour starting in March and won’t stop until he stomps through the Coachella Festival in April. It’s time to open the curtains and crank a copy of 2007’s What Is?!. Your hungover buddy won’t sleep when King Khan and The Shrines start playing.
Not many garage bands touch the soul music of James Brown, Curtis Mayfield, and Otis Redding. King Khan’s scratchy wail combined with the Shrines ear-splitting horns, psychedelic guitar and keyboards sound like an undiscovered group from 1968. What’s impressive is that Khan hails not from Georgia, Chicago or even Haight Ashbury, but Germany by way of Montreal, Canada.
If he sounds like he’s living and breathing music on record, you’ve never caught his breakneck stage act. He dons various costumes, consisting often of nothing but swim trunks, a cape and funky shades. King Khan demands crowd participation and may wander into the crowd in search of it. By Coachella in April, the Mojave Desert won’t be the only thing making you hot and sweaty.
