The Rocky Horror Picture Show Celebrates Its 35th Birthday in Blu-ray

You don’t have to do the Time Warp to celebrate the fact that The Rocky Horror Picture Show is marking the 35th anniversary of its release this year. It’s hard to believe the cult classic is that old, mostly because it’s always playing on a silver screen somewhere; it’s said to be the longest-running theatrical release in cinematic history.

Spawning an entire pop sub-culture of re-enactment and audience participation, RHPS celebrates, among other things, ’50s sci-fi, classic horror films, rock and roll, and gender bending. Tim Curry fills out his black fishnets and corset nicely (and wow, the guy can sing!), Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick are forever young, and the music, by Richard O’Brien and Richard Hartley, rocks pretty hard. In fact, if you don’t find something to like here, there may be no hope for you.

Our cinema- and fun-loving spirits are buoyed by the news that Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment is releasing RHPS on Blu-ray on October 19, just in time for Halloween. The high definition transfer is being mastered from the original camera negatives, and will be accompanied by a 7.1 soundtrack. Some extra features are exclusive to the new release, and for a limited time, The Rocky Horror Picture Show: 35th Anniversary edition will come with a 24-page collectible book containing photos by Mick Rock, the chief still photographer for the production.

I see you shiver with antici …

…pation.

'Jack Irish: Season 3' is a great mystery - one that's made even better due to the very human heart that beats beneath its surface.
