In 2013, camera companies will be struggling to compete against current generation smartphones, which are providing increasingly better incorporated cameras. To step their game up, traditional cameras must offer net advantages that bring significant improvements not only to picture quality, but to the whole picture-taking experience. This means faster, sleeker and tougher devices.
Fujifilm has had a strong presence at CES 2013, announcing a total of seven new cameras, of which six offer long zoom. The top product of the line is undoubtedly the FinePix X100S, which will start selling in March, and cost $1,300. That’s quite expensive, but well worth the investment for any photography lover, considering the impressive specs of the camera.
Although it looks a lot like its predecessor, the X100S is improved in almost every respect – it has a new 16.3 megapixel APS-C X-Trans CMOS II sensor and a powerful EXR Processor II, making the device less noisy and enhancing its picture quality by about 25 percent when compared to the X100.
With an autofocus time of 0.08 seconds, a brand new color filter, a startup time of 0.5 seconds, and a shutter lag time of just 0.01 seconds, the Fuji X100S is faster, more reactive and more stable than the previous generation, allowing users to quickly snap dynamic pictures that they would have otherwise missed.
Additionally, the new camera offers a world premiere, according to Fujifilm: the Digital Split Image feature provides advanced focus by letting the user overlay two images and align them manually, a very useful technique in precision macro photography. The camera can also record full HD video at 60 fps, and render it on a 2.8 inch LCD panel that has a generous viewing angle.
The camera’s menu also benefited from a makeover, and now incorporates the Q key to bring up quick-menu or “Fuji X100 q menu” commands, consisting of eight different artistic effects that can be applied to the pictures. Appearance wise, the Fuji X100S features a leather outer layer, and a magnesium alloy top and base.
