UK viewers who subscribe to either Sky or Virgin Media are in for a treat. Hit US television series The Defenders premieres tonight, Friday 8 April, at 10pm on FX (Sky 124/Virgin 157) and FX HD (Sky 124/Virgin 158).
The show is a legal dramedy (mix of drama and comedy) which follows the exploits of Las Vegas defence attorneys Nick Morelli (James Belushi of According To Jim) and Pete Kaczmarek (Jerry O’Connell of Piranha 3-D). The friends and business partners take on many challenging and high profile cases which other lawyers are sometimes unwilling to take on. The mavericks do whatever it takes to obtain justice for their clients even if it often involves crossing ethical lines and venturing into legal grey areas.
Belushi and O’Connell are a formidable double act and the rapport between their characters brings the show to life. Strong writing and casting throughout the series provides as many laugh out loud moments as touching ones which gives the show the balance needed to reach out to all viewers.
The Defenders originally aired on the CBS network in the United States and is based on real life law firm Cristalli & Saggese. Whilst a certain degree of creative license is taken, the cases featured in the show are based on actual cases the firm has worked on. In fact Michael V. Cristalli and Marc Saggese have been involved as consultants with Belushi and O’Connell spending a week shadowing them in Las Vegas as part of their preparations.
I can’t recommend The Defenders highly enough, so if you have Sky or Virgin you really have nothing to lose by checking out the first episode tonight. If you enjoy it you can look forward to the additional 17 one hour episodes which comprise the rest of the first series.
