Comics are nothing new. Games are the same. But over the past few years there has been an onslaught of titles that have been fusing the two together. Add one more to that list, The Adventures of Retrobot immerses the player into a thick plot and exciting tank shooter style gameplay and is now available on the App Store for iPhone and iPod touch.

Comic-inspired entertainment is nothing new and rightly so since including a super hero or villain in a movie or game gives the storyline a lot more depth and allows the viewer to really dive in and think about everything that has happened and not just what is happening in front of them. It’s more rewarding than just simply watching a shoot’em up film or brainlessly shooting objects and foes to rack up points. Don’t get me wrong, that can be a lot of fun, but lacks any sense of, well, depth.

This is where The Adventures of Retrobot shines in that the developers, Endeavor Bros and Monkube, decided they wanted more than just a shooter. They wanted a hero, sidekick, storyline in the graphic novel sense all mashed into a side-crolling tank shooter style that I’m finding is hard to put down. Yes, it’s addictive.

The storyline follows Retrobot, a DIY robot created to be a gaming buddy. And while most of his life was easy going, now he’s been thrown into a situation where he has to adventure out to save his maker from the evil robots who’ve taken over the world. But, he’s not alone as he has his trusty monkey sidekick named “Toto.” Who doesn’t want one of those?

As the player progresses throughout the game, they can pick up new weapons such as the fire thrower and green tri-laser as well as power-ups such as a shield and EMP blast. These are all very handy as the game becomes very challenging and will take a few tries before getting past level 4 or 5. The first few bosses are more of a premise of what’s to come in that they help the player understand how the bosses work and are mostly a training course for the evil bosses in later levels.

The Adventures of Retrobot is an ode to classic games as it has references throughout the game. Beyond the easter eggs, this game is a solid tank shooter and add in the beautifully designed storyline and graphics by Ape Entertainment and The Adventures of Retrobot is a must-have game for iPhone.
