Telemarketing (sometimes known as inside sales)is the method of direct marketing where a sales person solicits prospective customers to buy products or services typically over the phone. Telemarketing could include recorded sales pitches played over the phone as well.

Its said that the first telemarketer began in the early 1950s. The technique has increased in use and many people have at least received these calls on some basis — which can be unwanted.

Telemarketing in a positive sense, is used by commercial companies, charities, alumni associations, political parties, etc. to drive sales, donations, or even get votes.

Telemarketing has been negatively associated with various scams, fraud, with sometimes deceptively overpriced merchandise. Some people may complain about telemarketers.

The do not call registry was formed in the United States to enable consumers to have their phone numbers removed from telemarketing databases for five years. This list does not apply to political parties and charities.
