The Jabra Rox Wireless Headphones fill my head with such happy, happy tunes.

Tech Review: Jabra Rox Wireless Headphones

I’ve been lucky enough to test out some great headphones in the past, and Jabra’s Rox Wireless Headphones has just jumped into the ever-evolving mix. There is always a touch of hesitation for audiophiles when the ‘wireless’ feature is added because it commonly coincides with a drop in sound quality and depth, but Jabra is no newbie to the world of speakers and sound devices, so I pushed those thoughts aside and dove into testing.

Jabra Rox Wireless Headphones

Jabra Rox Wireless Headphones deliver a surprisingly crisp and deep range of sound. The bass is there, the treble is there, as is the fullness of sound, often the quality left behind in moving from wired over-ear style to wireless in-ear. The set comes with three sizes of earbuds, three sizes of ‘earwings’, a charging cord, a protective bag, and walk-through instructions.

One of the first things I tested was the pairing process to my Bluetooth devices. This is where the Rox Wireless really begins to shine. The pairing process is beyond simple, no pairing codes to enter anywhere. Also, once you turn them on for the first time, a voice will actually guide you, telling you each step in how to pair them and how many devices are currently connected. I paired them with my iPhone, iPad, and Macbook Air (I know, Mac addict for sure). Now, often the process of connecting and disconnecting Bluetooth devices can be troublesome, and they don’t always reconnect as easily and effortlessly as you would like, but Jabra nails it.

The backs of the earbuds are magnetized, so when you are done using the headphones, you drape them in front, push them together and SNAP, you’re good to go. Once the earbuds are stuck together, they will automatically disconnect from your devices since they know they are no longer in use. When you’re ready to start up again, just pull them apart, put them in your ears and you’ll hear that friendly voice telling you you’re connected and how many devices are ready.

I’ve done it dozens and dozens of times, and the connection never slips, never needs re-pairing. It’s beautiful.

As with many other Bluetooth devices these days, the headphones can take calls as well. I tested this by walking outside my house and having my wife call me. She said the sound on her side was no different, like I was talking directly into the phone. On my side she was coming in very clear through the headphones, and I was really impressed. The only weird thing was hearing the muffled sound of my own voice when I talked, but it’s a really small detail for such high quality reception.

I usually have some problem with properly fitting in-ear headphones, due to the shape of my ears. So, I was intrigued by the addition of the earwings to the new Jabras. Sizes and placement are clearly marked, and once you have them set onto the earbuds, the process of slipping the earbud into place is as simple as a single twist. The rubber earwings slip instantly into the fold inside your ear and help keep everything in place.

My only issue here was ear fatigue. As useful as the earwings are, I found they caused some mild discomfort after long periods of usage. It may not happen for others, but that’s what I got. But if you play around with the different sized earbuds, you may not need the earwings at all. By trying out the three different sizes I found the set which fit me perfectly and didn’t need the extra support.

Another concern in some headphones is noise bleed. Other folks around you may be able to hear what you’re playing, depending on your volume, but the unique design of the rubber nubs on the Jabra Rox earbuds do an amazing job of blocking outside noise from coming in. When I had them in at work, my officemate turned to  talk to me and she sounded like one of the adults from the Charlie Brown cartoons, “WAH WAH WAH WAH WAH”.

All in all the Jabra Rox Wireless Headphones are a powerful competitor in the in-ear headphone market. Huge sound, great wireless ease, and superior Bluetooth connection technology all make this a really stand-out product.
