Restaurant Review (NYC): Top Chef Alum, Angelo Sosa's New Spot

Angelo Sosa has always been one of my favorite contestants on Top Chef, and I am happy to say that his new restaurant Social Eatz in Midtown East is definitely a must try. Social Eatz is an Asian fusion restaurant, if you have watched him on Top Chef before, you’re probably thinking, “DUH!”. Not only was the food delicious, but the prices were extremely reasonable. At this time, they don’t have their liquor license yet, so without alcohol, my friend and I spent a total of $30 for 3 dishes and left very full and satisfied.

We started with the smoked St. Louis pork ribs marinated in mesquite-smoked tamarind. While we were extremely excited to try this dish, I think that they were having an off night with it. The meat wasn’t that tender and the flavors didn’t 100% mesh too well together. I like being able to tug the meat off of ribs with my fingers or teeth, but I actually had to use a knife and fork to cut it off. It was simply an average dish. I wouldn’t need to try it again, but part of me wants to, because after tasting the other dishes, I have a feeling that something happened in the kitchen with the ribs that particular night.

Next I munched on the Bulgogi burger that was sautéed with soy, sugar, scallion, garlic and sesame oil. It’s topped with cucumber kimchee, kewpee and a Japanese mayo. This was one tasty burger. I fell in love after one bite. You could taste eat ingredient and the flavors just burst so brightly in your mouth. The fries were good too, but the star is really the burger. I can’t wait to try their other ones. A+!

Last, we were served the Korean beef tacos that were made of skirt steak and served in corn tortillas with a spicy bean sprout kimchee. The meat was incredibly tender and had bold flavors that were addicting. It was just as tasty as the burger and I am equally excited about trying all of the other tacos on his menu.

Another bonus about Social Eatz? If you get dumbstruck by chefs, you will be happy to know that Angela Sosa himself wanders around the restaurant. So stop by if you want so good eats and an autograph.

My nickname is Juice and I love food. Seriously love food. I will pretty much eat anything, except for certain animals such as horse, monkey, dog and cat. But, other than that, I am a very adventurous eater. Stinky tofu? Durian? Jellyfish? Kidney? Bring it on!
