In-N-Out: The Cult of Hamburger - Comments Page 2

There's a fast food cult, and its leader is In-N-Out

When a person like me visits California from a staid Midwestern state like mine, one of two reactions is bound to occur. Either people love the offbeat and the weird or they absolutely hate it.…

    Duane,

It's an indication of how much American cultural influence this place has slurped up, really since WWII, when you can talk to me about virtually any American TV show and I will have seen it ... and in Australia, not America. Adam West's Batman lives long in our memories, especially for the babyboomers (we had a story about the names given to some unsavoury rugby-league tackles the other day - "cruncher", "grappler", "prowler", etc, - and someone suggested in the newspaper that they sounded like villains from a Batman episode).

And they're still doing reruns on some pay-TV channels. My son became a fan watching the re-runs when he was young.

I loved Kato in the Green Hornet. Perhaps the reason just about every red-blooded bloke in OZ loves the 300C is because it subconsciously reminds them of the Hornet's car. Hadn't thought about it, but you're bloody well right, they are similar. Perhaps the designer was a Green Hornet fan or had some subconscious influence.

Like I say, the 51st state indeed - just with understandable accents, a proper flag, good cars and (sadly) beet on burgers :)

Coming from the Midwest, I just had In-N-Out for the first time about two hours ago. Absolutely incredible. I was blown away.

Andrew, I agree. I've been back in Michigan for two weeks, and I find myself craving an In-N-Out as we speak. I wonder what magic fairy dust they sprinkled on my burger, but it worked.

Just this article makes me crave In-n-Out. I wish I still lived in CA for that one reason alone!

I looove In N Out. I'm a native LA girl, grew up ten minutes from the first In N Out store, and now I'm living in wine country north of SF. For a while, there were only two stores near me, and going to either one meant either stopping by on the way back from the city or making a special twenty-minute drive for it. Don't get me wrong, it's worth the drive every time, but still. Then, last year, they opened a location IN my town. Yay! Unfortunately it's down the street from a community college..meaning it's packed basically all the time. But it's comforting to know that I can get my fast-food-heroin fix when I need it. I'd rather have an In N Out cheeseburger, animal style, protein style, with fries and a Diet Coke than anything at any other fast food chain. Literally.
