Food Review: Energy Drink Rockstar

Seems the energy drink business isn’t about to stop buzzing anytime soon as just yesterday I saw a new product at my local convenience store. It isn't new new, just new to me. Being stuck with no choices of my liking, like >HYPE or Hansen’s Energy, I was about to fall into a deep state of catatonia if I didn’t get some guarana or ginseng in me. I picked out the only energy drink that wasn’t from a soda pop maker like Coca-Cola, which are usually just pop with added caffeine. Yes, reading labels is important kids.

So I picked out ROCKSTAR, which was a big can, not the usual Red Bull-size can we are used to seeing. The can’s labeling is just horrible. It reminded me of the Solid Gold strip bar decorations: gold on black and tacky. But who cares? I needed to refuel on energy and I needed it now.

I get back to my prison cell, the cubicle, and pop open the can. I take a whiff and it’s not too smelly like some brands — like Guru, which smells like urine. My first swig made me wince, it tasted a lot like Red Bull, of which I’m not a big fan. But the taste isn’t as heavy as Red Bull so I go on. This thing is packing though, because after a few sips I felt a little something in my forehead. By the time I was done with the can, I was wide-awake and stayed that way for most of the day. It didn’t turn me into a Chihuahua on crack, but boy did it pack a punch!

I had to see what was in this drink. The ingredients:

The sinus thing isn't just in your head (no pun intended). I am recovering from a sinus infection after relying on it one day too many in a row. Of course, I was also having trouble sleeping at night, so whatever Rockstar did, it's merely an accomplice. I would love to hear about anything you find out about a real link with the sinuses.
