Fashion Tips and Tricks for Women Over 50: Accessories

In previous posts, we've talked about proportion, line and color, and some basic rules for choosing what looks good on you. Accessories can also help or hinder your total look. Let's start with shoes. Some of those popular gladiator styles make feet look like hooves — not flattering no matter your age. Shoes shouldn't look like furniture. They're meant to make your legs, your feet, and you look attractive.

If you're wearing a dress, you can lengthen your legs with a skin-colored shoe. A nude shoe will work with any color outfit. You don't have to go clattering around in skyscraper heels to look sexy. Here are the shoe staples you need in your closet for spring: a bright color or metallic flat, a tan thong sandal, a chic sneaker, and a kitten-heel shoe. Flats are in this spring, and there are tons to choose from.

In bags, strap length is important. If you're on the short side, your bag should fall above the waist. The same is true if you don't want to call attention to your hips. You don't want a bag adding to your size. When in doubt, carry a clutch which looks good with everything. We're in a less-is-more era, so don't carry your entire life in your bag. And, please, no fanny packs or those bags that are supposed to be good for your back. They're ugly! Bulky hardware is out, and your bag and your shoes should never match.

For spring, color is king. Try a lipstick-red shoe with a camel pant, or a sunshine-yellow bag with a navy dress. Woven accessories are also in; anything that looks like you picked it up at a bazaar on the other side of the world. Python is everywhere in shoes, bags, even bracelets. It looks especially fresh in bright hues of aqua, pink, or electric blue. Stripes are in for bags, scarves, and hats.

In jewelry, your basic wardrobe should include strands of pearls in varying lengths, large-link toggle bracelet and choker, pearl studs, delicate chain necklaces with charms, a pair of chandelier earrings (only if you have a longish neck), and a statement necklace. Of course, diamonds never go out of style. Be careful with jewelry. It should enhance an outfit, not overwhelm it. When in doubt, take it off!

Next time, we'll talk about how to shop.

Good tips for women of any age. I would like to add couple more. Layers of bangles (lots of thin bracelets) are in again as well as colorful scarves and wraps.
