Construct the Ultimate Wine Cellar

Presented by WNBC and LX.TV, OpenHouse New York is an original weekly television series about New York's residential real estate market. Hosted by LX.TV's Sara Gore and George Oliphant, OpenHouse New York features weekly access to distinctive and noteworthy properties in the New York tri-state area. The show presents an intimate view of New Yorkers as they search for, purchase, and improve their dream homes.

For any oenophile, home renovations begin and end with an installation of a home wine cellar. In this week’s Floorplan segment, George Oliphant meets with Master of Wine, Chris Cree, and Josh Farrell, the wine director of Wine Enthusiast, for some expert tips everyone should consider to suitably house everything in a personal wine collection.

Cree cites the import of light sensitivity, temperature and a host of conditions meant to replicate the experience of being in an actual cave in order to preserve the true flavor of one’s wine collection. Farrell offers some more practical wisdom about cooling systems such as the through-the-wall, split system and hybrid systems and wine racks ranging from the Redwood Rack Kit to a designer oak kit.

After hearing from the experts and with the warm-bodied touch of a delicate shiraz with light tannin, George discusses the process with a happy home owner who has built such a cellar and is ready to share her experience.

Enjoy the waning days of summer, sip on a cool glass of gewürztraminer and watch this video for yourself…
