Book Review: The Unofficial Hunger Games Cookbook by Emily Ansara Baines

The Hunger Games is a 2008 young adult science fiction book trilogy that has been made into a 2012 science fiction movie. Set in the future, the Capitol selects a boy and a girl from twelve districts to compete and fight to the death on live television.  The Unofficial Hunger Games Cookbook is a collection of recipes that have been inspired by the characters and the situations presented in The Hunger Games. Included in the cookbook are a variety of different recipes that include those inspired by foraging with Katniss, hunting with Gale, baking with Peeta, and indulging at the Capitol.

The cookbook begins with an introduction to The Hunger Games and the characters.  I've never actually read the books or watched the movie, but with two teenagers, I am definitely familiar with it. Now that I've read the introduction to the cookbook, I know even more about the books. Each chapter included focuses on a different type of recipe and the introduction of each chapter gives you more of an insight into The Hunger Games. Chapters included are Breakfast of Champions, Baking Bread, Keep the Camp Fires Low and Forage (soups, stews, and salads), Humble Beginnings, Sink or Swim (seafood), Don't Call Me Chicken (poultry dishes for the brave), Put Some Meat on Your Bones (beef, lamb, and pork), Wild Game for Wild Girls, and Just Desserts.  At the end of the book, you can read Katniss's Family Book of Herbs.

Each recipe includes an introduction to where in the book/movie the recipe idea came from.  I found this particularly interesting and to be honest, I'm going to be checking out the books and movie because of the cookbook.  Also included are an ingredient's list and detailed instructions.  Each recipe also includes a box with Tips from your Sponsor where you'll learn time saving tips, substitutions and other helpful advice.  The range of recipes included covers all skill levels from something as simple as Parcel Day Applesauce to a more complicated Kiss of Smoke Brie Stuffed Pheasant Breast. While the section Wild Game for Wild Girls contains recipes for things like squirrel and raccoon that I don't see me preparing in the near future, it was fun to read about how the recipe fit into the books/movie.  Most of the recipes are definitely ones that my whole family will enjoy and the kids will love knowing about the connection to The Hunger Games.  If you or your children are fans of The Hunger Games, you definitely need to pick up a copy of The Unofficial Hunger Games Cookbook: From Lamb Stew to "Groosling" - More than 150 Recipes Inspired by The Hunger Games Trilogy
