Book Review: Good Housekeeping Comfort Food!

One of my favorite types of food on a cold winter day, is comfort food. No matter what dishes that brings to mind for you, the end result is a happy feeling and good memories. Good Housekeeping Comfort Food! is a cookbook that is chock full of triple tested comfort food recipes you'll be tempted to try. All of these recipes have the Good Housekeeping seal of approval which means they meet their strict standard of approval. Good Housekeeping has been a consumer advocate since 1900 and established their seal of approval in 1909.

Good Housekeeping's Comfort Food! contains recipes for Cozy Soups & Stews; Slow-Cooker Dinners; Perfect Pastas; Comfort Classics; Sandwiches & Pizzas; Satisfying Sides; Breakfasts & Brunches; and Favorite Desserts. There is also a section for metric equivalents. This cookbook has a spiral binding and a hardcover which means that when you open it flat, the pages lay flat for easy reference when you're cooking. I really LOVE this feature because I hate having to force a bound cookbook to stay flat.

The introduction contains information on how to stock your pantry, time saving appliances, safe non stick cooking, how to tell when dishes are done, freezing, and reheating. This is great for the beginner cook who is just starting to cook from scratch. The front of each recipe chapter contains a list of what recipes it includes and their pages which makes it super easy to find things. You'll find a great selection of recipes in this cookbook. Some are well known classics like macaroni and cheese but there are also some recipes that will probably be new to you like penne Genovese with white beans and pesto or lemon ricotta cheesecake.

The recipes themselves have a brief description, information on prep time and total time, a detailed ingredients list and easy to follow numbered directions. I love that there is also nutrition information on each recipe including calories, protein, carbohydrates, total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, etc. This is great for those who are trying to watch what they eat.

Almost every recipe includes a gorgeous color photograph of the finished dish in a variety of different types of dishes and settings. I really enjoy just flipping through the cookbook and being inspired by the pictures of the finished recipes. We tried the macaroni and cheese recipe and it was delicious!
