Book Review: A Year of Pies: A Seasonal Tour of Home Baked Pies by Ashley English

There is nothing that says traditional American dessert more than a home-baked pie. I have wonderful memories from my childhood of both my mother and grandmother preparing home-baked pies. I am completely pitiful at making my own traditional pie crust but that doesn't stop me at all from enjoying them. If you are interested in trying some new pie recipes or improving your pie-making skills, there's a brand new cookbook available. A Year of Pies by Ashley English brings you the very best of seasonal, natural pie recipes as well as tarts, galettes, and sonkers.

A Year of Pies: A Seasonal Tour of Home Baked Pies includes both sweet and savory choices at about a 75/25 ratio. There are a total of 60 different recipes and it works out to about 15 recipes for each season. I love that A Year of Pies includes some of my favorite classic recipes like Lemon Lime Chess Pie and Turkey Shepherd's Pie.

There are also some amazingly temping new recipes I'm looking forward to trying, like the Asparagus and Dill Quiche and the Gingersnap Pumpkin Pie With Candied Pumpkin Seeds. For those of you who struggle with making pies, the basics section includes six pie crust recipes plus troubleshooting tips, instructions for creating decorative pie and tart crusts and even tips for selecting seasonal ingredients.

The recipes themselves are beautiful and very well presented. Almost every recipe included has at least one full-color photograph. There is a detailed ingredients list and very easy-to-follow, step-by-step instructions.

Since the recipes are organized by season, it's very simple to choose one that works best for what you have in your garden or what you can find at the farmers' market. Also included in some recipes are handy tips that will make the process easier.

Each chapter (season) includes two guest recipes that have been submitted by top bloggers. It's so cool to see bloggers getting recognition for what they do. Since their blog links are included, you can check out more of their recipes as well.

I had such a hard time choosing which recipe to try and share with you all. In the end, I chose to make the Blackberry Sonker with Dip recipe because I had never heard of a sonker before and it looked delicious! It worked out beautifully.

This is definitely one of the most comprehensive pie cookbooks I have come across and certainly a delight to read and look at.
