"A castle full of cheese – what’s not to love?"
That’s how one visitor from overseas felt about last year’s Great British Cheese Festival, and it would be hard to take issue, given an event regarded by travel publisher Frommer’s as one of the ‘Unmissable Events and Festivals Around the World’.
This year the organisers are extending an invitation to try, taste and buy from a selection of some 400 cheeses from 100 British and Irish cheese makers in the beautiful grounds of Cardiff castle in the city centre.

If you love fabulous food, great fun and pleasant company, the Great British Cheese Festival at Cardiff Castle is for you – the high point of the cheese lovers' calendar.
Join the throngs of enthusiastic foodies and taste a cornucopia of sheep, cow, goat and even buffalo cheeses accompanied by whisky, beer, cider, perry and wine tastings, and a wealth of other artisan products, from gourmet breads to prize-winning pies. Set against the glorious grounds of Cardiff Castle, with fabulous music and entertainment – where else would you want to be?

Tickets for the event are likely to sell out and early booking is recommended. Tickets are available in advance via the website, or, if still available, on the gate. It is anticipated that some 10,000 cheese lovers will descend upon the Welsh capital for the event which runs from 22 to 23 September this year. For those visitors wishing to stay overnight it is recommended that they make hotel reservations as soon as they have secured tickets. The Park Inn hotel in Cardiff is a centrally located and only a few minutes’ walk from the castle and other city centre attractions.
Cllr Huw Thomas said: “This is great national acclaim for the festival, and recognition of Cardiff’s credentials for staging major national events. Cardiff Castle provides the perfect setting for the Great British Cheese Festival, and the event is a key driver for tourism to the city. It’s also wonderful to see other Welsh food events in the Top 10, enhancing the nation’s reputation for great cuisine.”
