Look for surprises and slights in this year’s 83rd Academy Awards Oscar nominations will be announced Tuesday morning, January 25th, 2011.

Tall Writer’s 2011 Oscar Nomination Picks

This year’s Oscar nominations from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) will be announced Tuesday morning, January 25th, 2011. Likely Best Actor nominee James Franco and likely future Catwoman Anne Hathaway will co-host the 83rd Academy Awards on Sunday, February 27, 2011 at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center. ABC will televise the ceremony live.

This year Sony, Paramount, Fox Searchlight, Warner Brothers, and, of course, The Weinstein Company should get the lion’s share of the nominations. Sony has Social Network, Country Strong , Another Year, Barney’s Version, Get Low, The Illusionist, Inside Job, and Made in Dagenham. Paramount has The Fighter, True Grit, How to Train Your Dragon, Shutter Island, and Waiting for Superman. Fox Searchlight has 127 Hours and Black Swan. Warner Brothers has Inception and The Town. The Weinsteins have Blue Valentine, The King’s Speech, Nowhere Boy, and The Tillman Story.

The Mouse House, a.k.a. Disney, could get recognition for films including Alice in Wonderland, Tangled, Toy Story 3, and TRON Legacy while Focus Features could score noms with The Kids Are All Right, Greenberg, and Somewhere.
Roadside Attractions has a chance with Biutiful and Winter’s Bone while Lionsgate could get in the mix with Rabbit Hole.

As always, look for several interesting honors, surprises and slights. Hailee Steinfeld’s performance in True Grit might move into this category from Supporting Actress while Leonardo DiCaprio’s performance in Shutter Island could him some extra support for a Best Actor nom in Inception. More nomination slots for the competitive Best Animated Film would have been nice. In the Best Supporting Actor category, Pete Postlethwaite could supplant his The Town co-star Jeremy Renner.

Every year these honors provide amazing excitement by celebrating various filmmaking fields. This nomination predication list includes most film categories. Likely winners/frontrunners are marked with an asterisk in the front. Here are my picks that include one alternate choice each that could steal a nomination:
