With a definite split in personality over the nine tracks that compose the album – something to be expected perhaps when we’re talking about an album that dances from big band jazz to Turkish folk melodies to something that’s almost reggae – 'Resolution' is definitely one of the more interesting listens I’ve happened upon in months.

On the surface, you might think that limiting the songs of a band that thrived on the interplay between various parts – most importantly the lead and rhythm guitars of Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir – wouldn't work, but you’d be mistaken. There is power and subtlety in these reinterpretations that I think Garcia would have admired, as his own personal tastes seemed to range to the more subdued and authentic soul of acoustic performances.

With the release of 'Trillium J,' Anthony Braxton redefines - or at least redeciphers - what opera should sound like in the 21st century. Here's a hint: Compelling.

If you are adventurous in your listening choices and want a bit of the unknown to color your listening experience, then I heartily encourage you to listen to Mr. Branxton’s 3 Compositions many, many times.

The combination of great music, intelligent improvisation, and solid technique makes for exciting listening.
