It must be a tough life when you’re a video game princess.

You’re constantly being captured by the bad guys and stuck in a cell while waiting for the knight in shining armour to come and rescue you. You miss out on all the action while you’re just sat there in shackles waiting for your hero to arrive.

Princess Peach has been more unlucky than your average princess. She’s been kidnapped more times than I’ve had hot dinners – and that’s a lot of kidnappings (or hot dinners, depending on how you look at it). The poor girl doesn’t even get the knight in shining armour to come and rescue her. Instead she gets a fat moustached Italian plumber in dungarees!

Still, it’s not her fault that the bad guy – Bowser – wasn’t smart enough to get rid of the hero’s of the Mushroom Kingdom instead of its ruler…until now.

In Super Princess Peach for the Nintendo DS, which was released in the US today, Bowser has kidnapped the two guys that caused him so many troubles in the 80’s and 90’s. He finally wised up and caught those heroic fashion victims Mario and Luigi, and has entrapped them inside his castle.

Now who’s going to be the hero to the hero’s? As rightful ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, our pretty-in-pink Princess Peach steps up to the plate…but she quickly realises she doesn’t have the butt-kicking-abilities that our brothers from Brooklyn have.

“Peach has never been a pushover, but this classically styled game really lets her put the hurt on her enemies,” says George Harrison, Nintendo of America’s senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. “Our damsel in distress has become a powerful leading lady.”

Gamers have to learn to use this new power to help them battle their way through 8 different side scrolling, enemy laden, coin filled areas, and trapped Toads.

The game is designed with old school purists like me in mind with traditional Mario gameplay, but everyone will get a kick out of helping the princess give her boot (and parasol) to the bad guys.

Super Princess Peach was released today for Nintendo DS in North America with a recommended retail price of $39.99 ($34.99 from Amazon.com.)
Keep your eyes peeled for a review soon.
