Out with the old and in with the new.  It’s the final week of new releases for July and there is a retro feel to the releases that are getting my attention.

Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble –
Couldn’t Stand The Weather (Legacy Edition)

I’ve already pre-ordered this one and may well be listening to it as you’re reading this depending on time zones and UPS.  What can brown do for me?  He can hurry the hell up and deliver the goods.

Couldn’t Stand The Weather was the second album from SRV and while it may not have reached the heights of his Texas Flood debut or swan song In Step, there were some moments of sheer magic and it is being expanded and given the deluxe treatment. This isn’t the first time Vaughan’s albums have been re-released.  The first time his studio output was remastered, each title had bonus tracks added.  Those bonus tracks are here as are a few additional cuts.  While I am sure some of those will be interesting, the real reason to jump on this deluxe edition is the second CD, which features 13 songs from a 1984 performance in Montreal.  I don’t yet know if that’s the full set but looking at the extended run time of some of the songs it may well be.  Vaughan was a brilliant talent and this is one more opportunity to remember and celebrate it.

Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band
Live At The Greek Theatre 2008

Another Ringo & His All-Starr Band live album?  I know, right?  What does this one have that others haven’t?  Each All-Starr Band has a different lineup than the previous incarnation so you get different performers joining with Ringo to play songs we all know by heart.  This may not rate as the most exciting title of the week but I’ll always love Ringo and he turned 70 earlier this month.  He’s Ringo.  What more do you need?

Robert Cray Band –
Cookin’ In Mobile (CD/DVD)

Robert Cray went years without releasing a live album and now he’s putting out his third in the past few years.  What separates this from the others?  Again, the DVD.  For Cray, this is the first live DVD of his career.  The show was filmed in Mobile, Alabama and the set list includes songs from throughout his career including his hit single “Smoking Gun.”

About Josh Hathaway

I’m glad to see this is cheap. $13 currently for a 2-disc deluxe edition is exactly how much these things should be ALL the time. Pretty much everyone who would be interested already has this in one form or another, so it’s just the bonus material we should be paying for. And a lot of the non-live stuff is already on The Sky Is Crying and the previous remaster too (all but 3 tracks, from what I read.)

Interesting little bit of trivia about the SRV set – it was due out last year for the 25th anniversary and was all set to go. Promo copies were pressed and sent out, and they’re actually different – it includes a completely different live set, a March, 1984 CBS convention show. So if you see a promo copy from 2009, pick it up!

Agree completely on the price, Tom. Many SRV fans have now bought this album 3x (this is my 3rd copy of it). This is how you do it.

Interesting trivia there, too. I will keep an eye on that. I’d love to get a glimpse of that. So far I’m enjoying the Montreal set they’ve included on this.
