Women's Australian Open - Semifinal Overview

Kim Clijsters d. Martina Hingis 3-6, 6-4, 6-3

Martina Hingis failed to exact revenge over Kim Clijsters as she lost her  highly anticipated quarterfinal match against her Belgian opponent in a two-hour-and-three-minute battle at the Rod Laver arena.

Kim raced to a 2-0 lead in the first set. Both players started sluggishly, but Hingis found her rhythm and played smart tennis. She then went on to win the first set after Clijsters double faulted in the ninth game.

In the second set, both player held their respective serves twice for at 2-2. Hingis was besieged with errors, and lost a rally to trail Clijsters at 5-2. Just when Clijsters thought that she had the second set in the bag, Hingis hung tough to break  Clijsters' served before holding her serve and trailed Clijsters at 5-4. Clijsters won the next game to push the match into a third set.

Hingis returns Hingis led Clijsters in the third set at 2-0. Just then, Clijsters came out firing winners as she turned the table against Hingis who went on committing  unforced errors one after another, to win the third set, and the match.
 
"It's great playing her, but I don't want to see her in the quarterfinals ever again," Hingis said in jest. "It’s like every time I get to the quarters I have to face Kim. But, I mean, I enjoy matches against her. I prefer maybe semifinals next time. But it was definitely disappointing. I felt like I was winning the match and had all the things in my hands. It was the most disappointing loss I've had against her," added a dejected Hingis.

 

Maria SharapovaMaria Sharapova d. Anna Chakvetadze 7-6, 7-5

Sharapova's quarterfinal match lasted 133 minutes.

The first set started with the first five games on serve. The top seed was broken then and the next there games were also brakes. Maria then held serve to even the set at 5-5. The two players both held serve to force a tiebreaker. Sharapova won the first point in the tie breaker but Chakvetadze won the next two points. The two -time Grand Slam winner then won the next points. Anna then tied the tiebreaker at 3. The next two points where split between players. Maria went on to take three of the four point to win the tiebreaker and set 7-6. The first set lasted 59 minutes.

The second set started with the top seed taking the first two points but then was broken. The 12 seed held serve to even the set at 2. The next three games were on serve. Sharapova then got a break to go up 5-3. Chakvetadze then got a break to sat in the match. Anna then held serve to even the set at 5. Maria won the next two game to take the match. The second set lasted 74 minutes.
