I tell you what, if you thought that last week was going to be very short on intrigue in the world of college football...well, first of all, you were right, but more importantly you should brace yourself, because this week may actually be worse.
A mere three games show up on the radar as deserving of a preview, so let's get this over with, shall we?
- 8th ranked West Virgina hits the road to take on a surprising East Carolina team in what is an outside shot at our first top-ten upset of the season. West Virginia proved last week that their offense hasn't skipped a beat, as Pat White went 13 of 18 for 143 yards and three touchdowns in the first half alone in a victory over Villanova.
However, that same Villanova team actually outgained the Mountaineers, 399-354, including 266 yards through the air. Enter East Carolina, a team that was very efficient passing the ball against what was supposed to be a superior Virginia Tech defense, and you have a potentially intriguing matchup.
WVU's offense is far better than Tech's, but their defense also isn't quite as good, so this could be quite the shootout if ECU can avoid turnovers and keep their offense rolling
Prediction: WVU 48, ECU 38
- In another Big East - Conference USA matchup, 17th ranked South Florida also hits the road and travels, well, down the street to Orlando to take on an up-and-coming Central Florida team. South Florida threw Tennessee-Martin to the curb last weekend to the tune of 56-7, racking up over 300 yards rushing and allowing only one touchdown on a late fumble return.
Central Florida poses a much tougher test, though we'll see what they bring to the table. They faced an opponent ewually far down the food chain in South Carolina State, but only led 7-0 after three quarters on the way to a 17-0 final score. Their defense held its own, allowing a mere five first downs, but the offense is obviously looking for a definitive replacement for last year's 2,000 yard rusher, Kevin Smith. Four different backs carried the ball for 216 yards, with nobody truly sticking out.
