On that rare occasion that the Treehouse Fort sports radio show takes a Sunday off, I refuse to let a week's worth of idiocracy in the sports world go without comment. Thus, enjoy another stellar list of nominees for my "What Were They Thinking" segment and poll. This week's list is mostly football-based but covers other areas, including a once popular game show.
1. Steve Williams, Tiger Woods’ caddie, who said he of the world's third-highest ranking golfer Phil Mickelson at an event in New Zealand last weekend: "I wouldn't call Mickelson a great player, 'cause I hate the [expletive]." He later regretted this and other disparaging comments to the Associated Press, saying that he meant no harm but was "just having some fun." Yes, publicly insulting and having a personal grudge against a top-rated athlete is always fun times, indeed.
2. Buffalo Bills head coach Dick Jauron, for his idiotic decision to let young QB J.P. Losman throw instead of having RB Marshawn Lynch run out the clock vs. the Jets in the last couple of minutes of what turned out to be a 31-27 loss to the division rival on December 14. This brain fart, of course led to a three-way tie for first place in the AFC East coming into yesterday between the Jets, Dolphins and Patriots.
3. Tennessee Titans head coach Jeff Fisher, for saying a 49-yard FG was out of kicker Rob Bironas's range late in the 4th quarter of what became a 13-12 loss to the suddenly pretty decent Houston Texans. Bironas had successfully hit a 51-YD FG in the 3rd quarter! On top of that, the kicker has hit four 49-yard FGs this year, along with one 48-yarder and 47-yarder to boot. "It was not a good coaching decision," Fisher said after the game. That's an understatement.
