A shot in the lake. A couple of missed putts. Two sand landings. Some chip-ins. That's all that separates Tiger Woods from anybody else in the field at the PGA Championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club.
If it was anyone else, two "mistakes" would seem totally within the realm of plausibility. But it's Tiger Woods. At eight-under-par going into Sunday, with Padraig Harrington and the unheralded Y.E. Yang two shots behind him, the final round feels largely ceremonial.
In Woods's 14 major victories, he led after three rounds every single time, which is simply crazy to comprehend. (So please don't try to wrap your brain around it, we don't want to be held liable.) Nevertheless, his 71 on Saturday gave others room to decrease the deficit. Yang posted the top round of the day, a five-under-par 67. Padraig Harrington shot a 69.
Yang is pretty much an unknown. At 37, his first PGA victory came earlier this year at the Honda Classic. His other best finish was fifth at the Buick Open a few weeks ago, which that one really good golfer won.
Should the world continue to spin on its axis and Woods win his 15th major tomorrow, the 34-year-old would be three majors shy of Jack Nicklaus' record, who won his 15th when he was 40. Tune in tomorrow if you enjoy merciless slaughters of they who comprise The Field.
