Tiger Woods Slump Talk Is Nonsense

A writer from the Star-Ledger in New Jersey declared that after Tiger failed to close out the PGA Championship he is officially in a slump. Is that a joke? Tiger Woods is definitely not in a slump.

I don't think that this writer has ever watched golf until Sunday. First off, Tiger Woods is the best golfer in the PGA right now and maybe of all time. Second off, if this guy watched golf he would know that Tiger has the most wins so far in the PGA this year. He leads the league with five wins. The next closest person has two. His last two wins also came in the two tournaments before last week's major, at Firestone and the Buick Open.

Woods also held the lead through the first three rounds at the PGA championship. That is a small accomplishment in and of itself. However, it was the first time he led the first three rounds and failed to close out the win. He was previously 14-for-14 in that category. In the final round he went toe-to-toe with Y.E. Yang, who has played on tour for a while and was ranked 110. He also beat Tiger once on the Asian Tour.

Sunday was not a fluke win, because Yang is a great golfer. The outcome might have been different if Yang had not chipped in an eagle which gave him the lead over Tiger.

The fact is, a slump is when an athlete is having a tough time doing his job. In Tiger's case it would mean that he has been playing bad lately, missing some cuts, never winning. If a slump means that a player wins two tournaments in a row then finishes second in a major, then I apologize to the writer. But it doesn't. Tiger is the best golfer in the PGA and until he stops winning, he is not in a slump.

Oh, by the way, he is leading the Fed Ex Cup standing by over 1000 points in only 13 events played. The man in second has played 18 events. Just a little fun fact.

"Slump" is a relative term. For Tiger Woods, this *is* a slump. No Majors victories in a year. That's like Tony Gwynn "only" batting .330.

Yeah. With Tiger, the word "slump" is a red herring, so points off the Star-Ledger writer for using that word.

Building off the relativism, RJ, this goes beyond not winning majors. In the Open Championship, Tiger didn't make the cut. On Sunday, he did what he rarely does and missed crucial putts. He's never really had two straight majors like that before.
