The WBC International Silver Super Flyweight Title Decided In Favor Of Morales

On September 8, 2012, the WBC International Silver Super Flyweight Title was decided at the Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula, California. The principals were Luis Maldonado (of Ocotlan, Mexico) who weighed in at 114.8 pounds, is 5'6" and came in with a record of 38-8-1. His opponent was Ivan "Terrible II" Morales (of Tijuana, Mexico), who weighed in at 115 pounds, is 5'7" and had a record of 17-0 (KO 12) coming into the bout. Ivan is the younger brother of future Hall of Fame boxer Erik Morales.

Both fighters were in top condition. The first two rounds went to Morales, who bobbed, weaved and avoided many of Maldonado's best shots. Morales simply delivered harder and more effective punches. The third round went to Maldonado, who was a bit more aggressive and able to punish the body to do damage. The fourth and eighth rounds were roughly even.

Maldonado won the fifth round narrowly by scoring more body punches and with his aggressiveness. The sixth, seventh and ninth rounds went to Morales, who frustrated Maldonado while delivering harder punches.

Morales won the ninth round, thereby setting up a real contest in the last round. For most of this fight, Morales utilized a longer reach very effectively to frustrate Maldonado at every turn. There were times when Maldonado was successful at scoring very effective punches on the inside.

The last and tenth round was furious. Both fighters sought to gain an advantage. At one point, Maldonado avoided a punch and veered toward the inside to punch Morales's body. The fans saw an ugly clash of heads with Morales getting the worst of the situation.

The referee stopped the fight to allow Morales's head wound to be examined by the ringside physician. The clash of bodies left a nasty cut over his right eye. After many minutes, the fight was stopped for good halfway through that final round.

The crowd waited patiently for the decision of the judges. Finally, the winner was announced and the WBC International Silver Super Flyweight belt was secured around the waist of Ivan Morales in a fight that was very competitive.

This boxing fan scored the fight in favor of Morales by a score of 97-95. More importantly, the judges scored the bout in favor of Morales, with a unanimous technical decision: 97-93, 97-93, and 98-92. The crowd in attendance looked satisfied with the decision as well.
