Sounders FC Shut Out Colorado 1-0

Part of: Pacific Northwest Sports Report

The Colorado Rapids traveled to Seattle yesterday, April 14, making their first visit since Rapids player Brian Mullan broke Sounders Steve Zakuani’s leg, ending Zakuani’s season.

Zakuani is still rehabbing from the horrific injury almost a year later. Sounders fans made sure Mullan knew it wasn’t forgotten either, booing him every time he moved, from pregame introductions to the final whistle.

Mullan almost got another dagger in when he appeared to score in the 33rd minute. Mullan took the rebound from an Omar Cummings shot and put it into the back of the net. Luckily for Seattle, and for the fans already lusting for his blood, Mullan had strayed offside before getting the rebound.

The first half was pretty evenly matched. After the halftime break, Seattle came out and dominated. The Sounders out shot Colorado 12-1 in the second half.

Leading the way was forward Fredy Montero. The leading scorer last season for Seattle, Fredy has yet to score this season. He looked dangerous all day, particularly with his high energy play and excellent passing. Montero has gotten the reputation for being a little lazy off the ball. If it's true, he's changed for the better because this season, he is one of the most active Seattle players.

Montero was paired up front with Eddie Johnson. The two looked better together and Johnson, if he stays healthy, this could turn out to be one of the deals of the year.

For all that, the match stayed scoreless up to the 63rd minute, thanks to a great effort by Rapids keeper Matt Pickens. Pickens seemed to have made it his personal mission to keep Montero off the score sheet, turning in an excellent result against Montero.

In that 63rd minute though, it wasn’t Montero that beat Pickens. No, it was Zach Scott, an original Sounders player when the team moved to the MLS, a player that hadn’t scored in 2,048 MLS minutes, the longest scoring drought in Sounders history.
