So You Want To Play The Ponies: The Horseplayer World Series – Preview Part III

Part of: So You Want To Play The Ponies

The Horseplayer World Series for 2007 is now complete. Because of the severe winter storms that plagued the United States before and during the January 19-21st tournament, the turn out was smaller than expected with last minute cancellations. Still 715 hardy players made their way to the Orleans Hotel and Casino to do what they love best. Playing the ponies!

This year’s winner, a thirty year old from Lowell, Massachusetts who only started handicapping five years ago took home the big prize. How did this happen? While visiting a casino in Rhode Island, Geoff Dutton laid down a wager on an exacta. He won $70.00. He was hooked.

Over the next five years he became more serious about his handicapping and began to read everything he could about the sport. He honed his skills by going to Suffolk Downs in Boston and Rockingham Park in New Hampshire.

This year he was determined to play in the Horseplayer World Series. On a tight budget, he bought in to the 2007 contest and made his way to Las Vegas On the first day, he didn’t do so well only scoring 334 points. The second day had him back in the running and on the third day he was up to 2929.40 points. And winning $357,500 dollars!

You can read all about the weekend from the tournament director Linda Ferris at the Coast Casino website.
