SEC Week Four Previews and Picks

Part of: SEC Weekly Preview

All game times are CDT.

Ole Miss at South Carolina
The first big test of the season for the Rebels comes on the road in Columbia. SC's offense has been downright inconsistent over the first part of the season and Ole Miss has been up and down as well. The biggest difference between these teams is at quarterback. Ole Miss has one and South Carolina doesn't. That's more than enough to get them past the pesky Gamecocks. Ole Miss 24, South Carolina 13. This game is televised on Thursday night on ESPN at 6:30 p.m.

LSU at Mississippi State
Hats off to Dan Mullen and the Bulldogs who have looked much improved through a 2-1 early season record. LSU has yet to play a complete game and if the Tigers are going to contend in the SEC West, now is the time. I expect MSU to hang around in this one because John Chavis hasn't been the fix for the LSU defense I was expecting and the offense hasn't been what the talent would lead me to believe it could be. In the end, LSU has way too many horses to drop this one. LSU 31, MSU 20. This game is televised on the SEC Network at 11:21 a.m. Check local listings.

Arkansas at Alabama
No team in the SEC has looked as good as the Crimson Tide so far. Alabama beat up Virginia Tech and then slapped around a couple of cupcakes tuning up for the run through the conference schedule. Arkansas proved it can put up the points, but the defense is only marginally improved from last year's dismal squad. The Hogs can air the ball out and that is a small chink in the Alabama armor. However, Alabama will grind up that Arkansas defense with a power running game accented by improved quarterback play. This one may be close early, but the Tide will pull away in the second half. Alabama 41, Arkansas 21. This game is televised on CBS at 2:30 p.m.

Florida at Kentucky
Florida's lack of explosive playmakers was exposed last week as the Gators struggled to score abundantly against Tennessee. Kentucky won a shootout with Louisville and will be a decent test for the Gators, but they don't have the horses to hang in there for a whole game. Florida needs to make a statement in a conference game to regain momentum and confidence heading into the meat of the schedule. Florida 34, Kentucky 14. This game is televised on ESPN2 at 5:00 p.m.
