In the midst of an ongoing NBA lockout, Sacramento Kings forward Jason Thompson has devoted much of his time to giving back to the community. Thompson, a native of Mount Laurel, N.J. who played for the local Rider University, has promoted his foundation and the L.I.V.E. (Learn, Imagine, Voice, Educate) Like JT campaign, which emphasizes the importance of sports and academics for underprivileged youth.
On Saturday August 20, the Camden Riversharks minor league baseball team will host a fundraising auction for special game-worn jerseys featuring the Jason Thompson Foundation logo. For more information on how to donate and to purchase tickets, click here; proceeds from the winning jersey bids and ticket sales will go directly towards supporting the worthy cause.
I caught up with the Kings forward as he prepares to throw out the ceremonial first pitch, to discuss his community efforts and fundraising plans. Check back next week for a recap of Saturday’s festivities, as well as Thompson’s thoughts on Sacramento's recent acquisitions and future potential.
What are the goals of the Jason Thompson Foundation and the L.I.V.E. Like JT campaign?
For the most part, it’s about giving back to kids that are in the inner city and may have the talent, but not have the chance to do things in life. I just remember being one of those kids, and now I have the opportunity to give back — it's not just for basketball, but it’s for these kids [to succeed]. Hopefully, as my foundation and campaign progress, then I’ll be able to give scholarships and things for kids that don’t have those opportunities.
What was the reason behind selecting the Camden Riversharks game for this fundraising event and what can the fans expect?
I was born and raised in Mount Laurel, and Camden, not being a major city, but being the closest city, I had a relationship with the general manager and they thought it was a great thing.
I’m going to throw out the first pitch and the Camden Riversharks are going to be wearing Sacramento Kings-colored jerseys with my name on them. Then, after the game, they’ll have fireworks and we’ll auction off my jersey and their jerseys, as well. So it should be a good event and I hope people will come out to support it. It’s just something fun — it’s always good to have fun and do it for a good cause.
