A: On April 21, 1980, a young woman named Rosie Ruiz crossed the finish line to win the 84th Boston Marathon in the record time of 2:31:56 — a remarkable feat, especially since she wasn’t particularly sweaty or winded. Was she Superwoman? Well, if so, she apparently had the power to be invisible as well because when officials checked photos and video from various spots in the race, Ruiz appeared in none of them. It’s believed she started the race with the others, then left the course, hopped on the subway, then reentered the course about a half mile from the finish line.
Interestingly, it seems she qualified for the Boston Marathon by sneaking her way past New York Marathon officials in similar fashion. Needless to say, Ruiz was disqualified and stripped of her title; and hopefully she learned her lesson — that if you’re going to cheat to win, have the good sense to appear sweaty and winded at the end, and use a body double to make sure you’re represented in earlier stages of the race. Man, will these cheaters ever learn?
