NCAA Football Week 9 Preview - Page 6

Part of: BC Tailgate

#18 California at #7 Arizona State (10:00pm EST)
This week Arizona State is going to find out what they are actually made of. Up to this point they haven't played any really good teams, and this week they face #18 California. Despite the lower ranking, California is probably the more complete team in this game and should be able to put some big numbers up on the scoreboard. Arizona State also has a pretty potent offense, and Cal's hot-and-cold defense needs to step up to keep them under their 38 point average.

The Other Games
Arizona at Washington (3:00pm EST)
UCLA at Washington St (6:30pm EST)
Stanford at Oregon St (6:30pm EST)

Is there SEC football when Alabama doesn't play? Of course not, but we'll pretend.

Let's begin, though, by allowing me to continue basking in the glory of witnessing firsthand God's own retribution against the enemies of the people, the Tennessee Volunteers. As I filed out of the stadium in a state of natural euphoria it occurred to me The Great Pumpkin might never visit the Bryant-Denny Pumpkin Patch ever again. Sayonara, Fat Phil! We won't miss you.

If getting shithammered by Alabama isn't enough to cost him his job, getting beat by nemesis Steve Spurrier might be. Sure, Spurrier can't trade any of his Gamecocks but he won't need to against UT. South Carolina sports the better defense and the ol' ball coach will find a way to help his team find the end zone — he won't have to think too hard, defense has only been a rumor in Knoxville this season. It's really going to suck to be Phillip Fullmer this week, and I cannot convey how much I'm enjoying that.

The World's Most Tired Game Title a.k.a. The World's Largest Cocktail Party will likely be an elimination game. A loss for either Georgia or Florida will be their third and I can't imagine a three-loss team will play for the SEC Championship. It should also be noted I didn't think the East winner would have two losses – and they will – so we'll have to wait and see. Florida played inspired in overcoming a spectacular performance by Kentucky's Andre Woodson last week. Georgia seems to lack an identity right now. Matthew Stafford has not been able to elevate this team the way Tim Tebow and Andre Woodson have for their respective teams; expect a Florida win.

Hi, Josh, your fan club checking in...

Wow, I had forgotten about the intense hatred Bama has toward Phil. Thanks for reminding me, lol. Funny how just a couple of weeks ago the Tenn/SC tilt was expected to be possibly the one that decided the East. But UT gets their 3rd blowout (when they lose, they lose big) and Spurrier actually loses to Vandy. I think you'll get your wish in this game, however.

Ga/Fla...oh yeah, Florida all the way.

    And the others:
Auburn/Ole Miss: despite the loss last week, the War Eagles have played much better since dropping one at home vs. Moo State in week 3 and will probably win out from here. So of course they'll take this one against a coach who is in a race with Bill Callaghan to the head of the unemployment line.

MSU/KY: Moo State in an upset! Yeah, dream on.
