Maria Kirilenko Tops Vinci

Maria Kirilenko defeated Roberta Vinci of Italy to advance to the second round of the 27th Qatar Telecom German Open from Berlin.

The Russian dispatched Vinci in one hour and twenty-nine minutes and posted a 6-4, 6-3 win, where she won fifteen more points than her lower ranked opponent.

Next up for Kirilenko will be either Eleni Daniilidou from Greece or Czech’s Klara Koukalova, who will battle tomorrow for a most coveted place in the second round of this prestigious event. Whoever advances, it will be the first time Kirilenko meets either of them.

Should Kirilenko, ranked 24th in the world, win her second-round meeting she'll have a possible showdown with defending champion Justine Henin-Hardenne. Their only meeting was precisely one year ago in this same event when Henin won 2-6, 6-1, 6-3.

Kirilenko is also in the doubles draw where she partners with Gisela Dulko from Argentina. They will play the Klemenschits sisters in the first round.
