MAC Football Preview: WMU at Michigan State, Kent State at Akron

Part of: MACrimony

I hope you didn't buy the extra large bag of chips for today.

There are just two measly games this weekend for the Mid-American gentlemen. But don't worry, the conference will resume play on Tuesday. And Wednesday. And also Thursday and Friday. And, of course, Saturday. Perhaps if ESPNU desires to erect a football field in Tokelau and air a game live Monday morning at 6 a.m., I'm pretty sure they could lure Miami and Eastern Michigan for the event.

So once Kent State-Akron concludes, go spend some time with your family. Read a book. Play Stratego. Demand a recount in your local election for that tax levy enabling elementary schools to get 3G cell phone coverage. Look up where Tokelau is on a map, and try to use it in everyday conversation next week.

12 noon — Western Michigan (4-5, 3-3) at Michigan State (4-5, 3-3 Big Ten) (TV: BTN)

How fun. Identical records and identical conference records. This may very well conclude that WMU is the Michigan State of the MAC. Let's see. The Broncos' last conference championship was in 1988. Sparty's last one? 1987, with a partial share in 1990.

State already lost to one directional Michigan this year. Two is too many, especially for one as inconsistent as Tim Hiller's offense from Kalamazoo. Michigan State 26, Western Michigan 14

3:30 p.m. — Kent State (5-4, 4-1) at Akron (1-7, 0-4) (TV: Nope)

One man's trash is another man's treasure. No, I'm not talking about MAC recruiting. Of all the college football trophies, the one given to the winner of the Kent-Akron game is an actual no foolin' wagon wheel used by the founder of Akron University, John Buchtel, as far back as 1870. Legend says the wheel was stuck in the mud for over 30 years. Again, another metaphor for many MAC teams. (Notably Temple.)

It would be a shock to Northeast Ohio were Akron to somehow pull off the win. Kent State's defense is unnerving and the Zips lack any coherence on offense. Then again, it's not like Northeast Ohio expects anything less than the unexpected when it comes to football. These are Browns fans. Kent State 35, Akron 20
