MAC Football Preview: Ohio at Buffalo, Toledo at CMU

Part of: MACrimony

So you had to go two whole days without a Mid-American Conference game? Your prayers are answered, because it's finally Tuesday!

For fans of any football team that's currently 4-5 or worse, I have good news for you. Basketball begins this week! I have worse news for Toledo: your team has eight freshman.

7 p.m. — Ohio (6-3, 4-1) at Buffalo (3-6, 1-4) (TV: ESPN2)

With Kent State exposed as a nude emperor and licking their wagon wheel wounds against Akron over the weekend, the Golden Flashes' second conference loss gives the Ohio Bobcats a little breathing room in the MAC East. A loss here and Temple is suddenly in a class by themselves, which in previous years was usually a term of derision.

I'd like to think any game in Buffalo is not easy, even this year, but with mere wins over Akron and Gardner-Webb in UB Stadium, it's safe to say that Ohio has the edge, having won four straight MAC road games dating back to last year.

Ohio quarterback Theo Scott has thrown just one touchdown and four interceptions in his last two games, so for a Tuesday night game it may very well be a battle of who makes fewer bonehead mistakes. Buffalo 26, Ohio 21

8 p.m. — Toledo (4-5, 2-3) at Central Michigan (7-2, 5-0) (TV: ESPN2)

Central MichiganAre the Rockets serious about going full-time Wildcat with wide receiver Eric Page playing quarterback? That would be fantastic. Then again, it's not like without Aaron Opelt, UT can hang their hat on the type of offense for which they're regionally famous. Might as well try something new.

Not like Central Michigan, who can beat you with Dan LeFevour, Antonio Brown, or Bryan Anderson, so there's no need to mess with what's been working for four years. Brown may not get enough credit; he's second to LeFevour in rushing but also leads the team in all receiving categories. The crushing loss to Boston College took them off the top 25 radar but they're still well in line to run through the MAC.

Are the CMA Awards really going to be that thrilling? Hopefully this game will appeal to the nation's heartland as well. CMU 44, Toledo 25
