MAC Football Preview: Bowling Green at Buffalo

Part of: MACrimony

With no other recourse, MACrimony will be split into multi-article format for the Mid-American Conference's decadent orgy of weekday games.

7 p.m. — Bowling Green (3-5, 2-2) at Buffalo (3-5, 1-3) (TV: ESPN2/ESPN360)

Boy, this sure looked like a good one back in August. The defending MAC champions in Buffalo have pretty much relinquished the throne this year. Meanwhile, a team that beat up Troy, almost won at Missouri, and had a strong nonconference defense has turned into a whipping boy of their own.

The only reason to watch this game is to see two future NFL wide receivers. On one side, Buffalo senior Naaman Roosevelt is one of 11 receivers with at least 60 receptions (768 yards, 6 touchdowns), while Bowling Green senior Freddie Barnes has ... well, shucks, haven't I lauded this guy enough? Even after the bye week, he still leads the nation in yards (1054) and receptions (99), although he's now second in touchdowns (9). We shant hold this against him.

Considering all the yards Bowling Green has been putting up in the conference (460/game), one would have to think BG senior quarterback Tyler Sheehan has an edge over struggling Buffalo sophomore Zach Maynard. But consider that Sheehan is getting beat up more than most signal-callers: the senior has been sacked 23 times this season, putting him in the top 10 of the most roughed up QBs in the country. After each possession, they should have a graduate assistant check to make sure he knows his own name and how many fingers are being held up.

When it's an inconsequential game, even by MAC standards, it's a given that the nation will generally not care. But since it's a Tuesday game in November, the only saving grace should be that it ought to be a high-scoring, close game. It's got the potential. And hey, there's no World Series game on tonight. You might as well switch over. Bowling Green 35, Buffalo 31
