The New York Knicks need a point guard, but they do not need just any point guard. They need Steve Nash like yesterday. Today will be acceptable as well, and we'll take him tomorrow if need be, but it has to be soon. Very soon.
Last season we Knicks fans became caught up in "Linsanity" (all the furor around the blazing rise of point guard Jeremy Lin), but now that reality has sunk in, we can see that his free agency may be best left to others. If we truly want to win in this upcoming season, we need a point guard like Nash more than anything.
Most of us like the way the Knicks were going at the end of the year (let's not even think about the first round of the playoffs). Mike Woodson had taken over for Mike D'Antoni and got the team thinking about defense and not just shooting baskets. Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire seemed to enjoy playing for him (if not being on the same team), and we all kept saying the same thing to ourselves as we watched the team, "All we need is a point guard."
Now Nash is not going to come cheaply, and besides the Mavericks, the Los Angeles Lakers and Toronto Raptors are both in the hunt. The idea here is "Big Cash for Steve Nash." I don't believe the Knicks can outspend the other teams, but the idea of playing in New York must be at least somewhat appealing. He knows the pieces are there and that he could complete the puzzle. The Knicks would be a different (and far better team) with him on board. If enough money is put up, perhaps Nash will take it with an eye on the playoffs that will be almost a lock if he is on the team.
So, James Dolan, remember: "Big Cash for Nash." Get it done now. Please. The Knicks (and their fans) are so deserving of a great point guard. The ball is in your court, Mr. Dolan, but the clock is ticking.
