Going Crazy With Fantasy Football Zealots

I am one of countless millions of Americans who play fantasy sports.

And I am one of countless millions of Americans who see the joy being sucked out of the game by those who want to contest EVERYTHING.

Each year, I play two sports. The first is fantasy baseball with a group of strangers who share nothing but love for the game. There is some good-natured ribbing between fans of rival teams, some trades, and a team or two who quits playing ten games into the season. But overall, despite the fact that you must keep up with your team and all the transactions being made in the game, it's fun. And most importantly, it gives me a unique perspective on the nuisances of the game. I'm constantly checking the scores of the games to see how my team is doing. Just ask my law school friend; while at her friend's barbecue and at the recent Bloc Party show, I was constantly checking to see how the Braves Brian McCann was doing against The Mets. Just ask the woman who I met for dinner this weekend, I was constantly checking to see how Julio Lugo was performing. (Yes, I'm obsessed.) I can't go anywhere without wanting to find out about the baseball scores and stats.

But then, there is fantasy football. This is a game that slowly sucks the life out of a sport I've followed since I've been able to walk. At the rate my "A" league is going, I may be hard pressed to even care how Cadillac Williams performs by Week Six.

See, I play in a highly competitive, free, private fantasy football league with a group of friends. These people are all close friends of my college roommate and I've had the good fortune to meet them at his business school graduation and wedding. They are all highly educated, fiercely competitive individuals who bring their passion for hard work to the game. And that's not a bad thing.

You know, I haven't had this kind of FF angst like you, but here's an idea. Just diffuse the melodrama with some humor. Lighten up the party, man.

Interesting perspective... the whining... we're shooting a documentary about Fantasy Football. And we have some of the same whining in our league. We'll have to discuss in the film. 10yardsmovie.com
